Shali Fortress in Siwa (Old Town) is a wonderful example of ancient mud brick architecture. The modern Siwa has kept the traditions alive with Adobe Style design. Siwa is a must.

Quirky, quiet location. Really fun series of corridors and doorways and steps to climb for amazing views. Visiting a fortress didn’t sound like my bag but as it’s one of the recommended places I went. Definitely worth going to for the views, light rock and the quiet

It's like going to a journey to the past life. You can go all the way to the top of Shali fortress and there you can see the oasis from a top view. You can see the desert and the palm trees around and also the lake. You can imagine how people were living there in the past.Shali Fortress is in the middle of Siwa town, and is therefore an easy 5 minute walk away from any hotel/guesthouse in the city. It is ruins of an old fortress, and there are English signs with explanations.

The view from the top is quite stunning, and is a must. At night, the fortress is lighted.

It is also a GREAT place to see the sunrise in the morning.

The city was abandoned in the 1930s due to rains. The city is mud brick and was disintegrating. Very interesting though with great views of the Oasis.

Siwa oasis does have few sites worth the visit among which is the Fortress so a person would understand how Siwa all started.

We loved Shali Fortress. I felt like I was in a movie or a video game exploring the rooms and passages. It also offers a nice view of Siwa, and there are various shopping stalls around the base of the fortress.

Well to be honest, does Siwa justify a 9h trip from Cairo ?
The answer depends on what you are looking for...
Yes it is qite exotic as an oasis surrounded by sand sea.
BUT in terms of historical remains, you could be very disappointed.
The middle age citadel of Shali is in poor condition except some recent renovations still on (thanks to UE!).
The temple of Amon has very few remains as well.
The worst of it is the garbages covering the whole town without exception, even when you woke in the fields.
Simply disgusting but unfortunetaly very common evrywhere in Egypt.
There's absolutely no concern about environnment. Shame.

We visited the fortress while we were in town. It's nice but you need to manage your expectations. If you've been around Egypt and You've been to Luxor, this one won't blow your socks off!

Nothing to see really. We weren’t impressed with the fortress itself (maybe you have to be a fan of ruins and history in order to get it) and the view is similar to many other places in Siwa. It was slippery and tiring to climb up. Wouldn’t go again to be honest.

I wasn’t sure of waking up so early to catch the sunrise view at top of the shali fortress , but as soon as i reached there I knew how much i’ll regret if i’ve been there , I’ve seen the most beautiful view that i cannot forget until now , its so hard nowadays to catch up the sunrise view with a lake and old buildings and desert all around it was perfect
