The church is interesting with historical significance. It is reported to be the oldest in Ecaudor. Nearby there are some stalls. Among them one that sells tagua trinkets and other that sell swetts and food.

Little church just off the main road. Easily accessible. Definitely would recommend to make a short stop there if you are passing by. Church itself is very modest and is nothing like European churches however still worth seeing. Close by there is restaurant and a...More

Balbanera Iglesia (founded 1536), built by the Spanish is Ecuador's oldest surviving church. The church is floodlit, but locked at night and early morning, so unfortunately we didn't get to peep inside (see photos).

This is known to be the oldest church in Ecuador. Stone from pre-colonial ruins was used to build parts of it. When traveling South of Riobamba, it is on the right hand side of the road with ample parking. The inside of the church is...More

You should visit the first Catholic church built in Ecuador if you're interested in colonial history. Its outside features are worth taking a closer look at. In contrast, its interior is not particularly noteworthy.

For such an amazing piece of history, it is sad that this chuch depends upon the parish and tourist donations for upkeep. It would be nice if there were more artifacts and interpretation of the effect of the church upon the indigenous population. In some...More

Stumbled upon it while driving to Alausi to catch the train. Very small site but full of history nonetheless. It's right by the main road so a 15 minute stop would do.
