Jose Cabrera, who represents Equatours was FANTASTIC. I am an Anthropologist by training and was most impressed by his command of the culture, BOTH present and past. He has a great respect for the indigenous Incan people and gladly relayed the history for us through the centuries. He has an uncanny ability to determine where would be best to go. I doubt we left a stone unturned in Otavalo. He is very fluent in English, Spanish and Quechua. He is a great, safe driver.

So we did this walk in preparation for the Inca Trail. The top height is 4,600m - 400m above the highest point on the IT.... we got a lift from our Community host in Santa Clemente and got to the end of the track and the start of the trail at 0600, spotting a Honey Bear en-route.
We started in sun (3100m) and from 3600m onwards we were in cloud so no view.
Decided at 4288m to abort as cold, wet and windy. We had a guide - Tupac, but in view of recent tragedies decided to air on the side of caution. To that point 3.5 hours - a steady pace for two mid 50 year olds..
Coming down HARDER as very slippy and at one stage my wife fell badly, only stopped from serious injury by a gorse bush!
Back down in just 1.5 hours and no altitude sickness which when considering we were at sea level in Puerto Lopez just two days before was pretty good we thought.
So not the easiest climb, walk, but hey we live to tell another tale.

Climbed this old volcano yesterday. Took the La Esperanza bus from Ibarra and got off at the bridge. Caught a white pickup truck "taxi" to the trailhead for $6. and made arrangements for him to pick me up 8 hours later. The day started out beautiful but as I climbed it got more cloudy. This is very common on this mountain. At any rate, from the trailhead to the soft summit it was 4.5 miles and 4,000' gain. It took me 3.5 hours. Nice dirt trail in tall grass for about 3 miles then rock scrambling the last mile. Overall, a great climb. There's another peak a little higher but it's another 2 hours and it takes technical experience. If your not a technical climber don't do it without a guide.

We left from Otavalo on the first bus to Ibarra and then took the bus to La Esperanza. We got to La Esperanza and stopped at Casa Aida for help on where to go. They suggested we took a guide (and Aida's grandson is a guide and offered us a reasonable rate) but we decided against it. We got a truck up part of the way and started hiking at 10/10:30. The first hour was steep but the path was clear. At some point there were numerous paths but we could see a trail marker far in the distance and so we headed for that. Then the mist came in. We eventually decided to turn around. We should have used a guide. I don't know if a guide is necessary in the dry season but certainly in the wet season.

We traveled from Otavalo and it seemed to be easiest to organize a guide with a transportation from there. The drive took 2 hours to the start of the climb and then we followed a trail to the crater rim of Imbabura, approx 3 hours from the start.
During the hike through the tussock grasses, we were rewarded with the views of surrounding hills and Volcan Cayambe and from the North top of Imbabura were nice views of Cuicocha, Ibarra, Cotacachi and Cayambe. The last part of the climb was through rocky section, no more then class 3.
Once we reached the North Peak, we have asked the guide to continue to the South Peak of Imbabura. This meant to climb around some steeper sections, class 4, to the easy grave trail along the crater rim.
The whole climb took us 7 hours and was a bit challenging in couple of spots, but definitely worth it, would recommend to undertake it with a guide unless you are a confident climber.

you will see this volcano already while driving into Otavalo from the south. Nice, and should not be missed.

Whilst staying at the Hacienda Pinsaqui we rode up Imbabura to visit another Hacienda. There we not only got great views of the mountain but also learned about the flora and fauna and the protected forest. Being on horseback meant we got close to nature and the outstanding views without the breathlessness from walking at altitude.

We visited a place where we had a view of the Imbabura volcano on the way to Otavalo market, This volcano is surrounded by a lake and since the day was very clear we got a good view of the volcano.
Our stop st the viewing site was less than an hour enough to take photos of the surrounding areas.

I am fascinated by all of the volcanoes in Ecuador. This one is beautiful and had a sort of cloud-cover the day we were there. It adds a majestic aura to the surrounding geography.

For people serious about hiking this is a great hike. It takes about 5-8 hours and on a clear day you can see for miles and miles. One of the times I went up we even saw the volcano Riventador explode. For the best experience stay at San Clemente, a local eco-tourism operation. They provide food and guides, both great, as well as great rooms and amazing views. I have stayed their every time, a total of 3, and never regretted it.
