When I was there during the week nobody worked at the visitor entrance, so nobody could inform you about hiking routes. The lake is pretty, worth visiting if you are around the place. The stunning view, however, typically shown on pictures requires quite a big hiking. Don't expect guided traking opportunity on the spot. The little boat trip needs 8... More

Great hike - enjoy a boat cruise afterwords. You can find a bunch of trucks that will get you up there from the base/fort nearby. Good if just acclimating to the elevation.

The Crater Lake is a spectacular environment. One can walk the whole contour but that is a stiff walk of several hours and at an altitude of up an above 3.000 m. A boat trip on the lake is of course more relaxing, and you can go to the small Island in the middle of the lake and eat the... More

The perimeter trail is nicely maintained and a great hike for the day. About 8 1/2 miles long and climbing from an altitude of 9,300 fett to 10, 350 feet, one gets a nice work out while seeing some of the most spectacular views. I was there on a rather cloudy day and it was so neat to move in... More

Plan to spend the better part of the day and do the nice hike around the rim. Even though there are lots of people near the boat rides you will have the place to yourself after half a miles walk.

This lake is on the volcano and is a great place to hike and see local flora. There's a nicely developed perimeter trail and a small touristic area for a boat ride and refreshments. We had a rental car as it's a distance from the town of Cotachi, but tours or hired taxis will go here - it's worth it.

The hike around the crater is pure joy: the crater is stunning, the water so clear and blue, the grounds fascinating. One of the best hikes in Ecuador.

I started the hike on a Tuesday at 9am. There was no one else around and it was quite peaceful, plus the weather was warm but the sun wasn't glaring. It took me an hour and forty-five minutes to get all the way around to the road. The trail no longer goes all the way back to the start, it... More

Hiking around this beautiful lake is really highly recommended! Best is to start at the opposite side of the parking place (taxi can drop you there). And than walk some 3 hours to the parking place or even better to restaurant "el mirador" which offers real good trout and local cuy (upon reservation). Take some water with you and don't... More
