Before visiting, google "limnic eruption" and decide whether you want to be in the vicinity of this lake over literally almost any other one in the world...

Lake Kivu. Is situated beautifully surrounded by mountains ..the city of Goma is vibrant and has a variety of accomodation for the backpacker to luxury 5 stars. The lake is crystal clear but is nothing like eg lake Malawi. Tourism is normally exploring the adventurous traveler going to viru ga or the vulcano..while hots and lodges lie on the lake its potential has not really been exploited and everything needs to be arranged with "connections'. Once been no need to return .

The lake looks amazing and definitely different at different times of day.
there are a large number of sit out and restaurants on the banks of this lake to suit different taste buds.
However, there are no organised tours on the lake, except for a fewe private ones by lake side restaurants.
It is known to be full of Methane content, so be ware , NO SWIMMING RECOMMENDED

Though no much activities around the lake, it is one place to sit on the shore and relax and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine especially if you are staying at the Ihusi Hotel in DRC. The view is very beautiful especially from the air.

Lake kivu is so massive, the expanse is almost 45 kns and looks like a sea. There are number of resorts both in drc and rwanda on the banks of lake kivu offering excellent multi cuisine options. A must visit for all.

Enormous body of water, but still one of the smallest of the Great Lakes. Located between the DRC and Rwanda. Had 2 crossings in a traditional boat, from Goma to Tchegera Island and back. Rough weather makes a boat trip, well let's say interesting.

Crossing Lake Kivu, from Goma to Bukavu is a very exciting experience. The ferry takes almost 3 hours and the ticket costs US$50 with a regular luggage piece allowance (i.e. 10 kg). The whole experience is unique. Right from the boarding in a very crowded dock, where passport control is mandatory, despite the trip is domestic. Inside the boat, you´ll find 2 sections of 3 seats each with a central aisle. At the front, a really old tv screen and an older movie playing make this trip a back-to-the-past experience. A chicken sandwich and a juice is included in the ticket fare.
It is possible to stay outside the main hall of the ferry so you can enjoy the views of the lake and the coastline, which are just outstanding.

Lake Kivu is poisonous due to the volcano a short distance away. That being said, the lake is beautiful to look at, and worth spending time enjoying. Many of the passenger ferries leaving Goma did not look in the best of condition, pick your craft carefully, lake vessels in Africa have a bad safety record.
