The church is baroque and is lovely to visit it, particularly the shrine of the Saint behind the altar.

However, my visit was totally ruined by a very rude man working there who was controlling the queue for the ascent of the bell tower. I stood in the queue (waiting for others to come down) for about 10 minutes. This man then let 4 German people enter the tower. He then asked this group if I was with them. When they said no, he shouted at me in Croat and pointed to the back of the queue. I didn't know what I had done wrong, as I had been queuing. I said that I didn't understand what he was saying. He then just shouted again, more loudly and aggressively, pointing to the back of the queue. He was totally offensive and obnoxious - a disgrace that he was working in a church. Sadly, I didn't get to see the view from the tower. Not a good memory of my visit.

From all over, you can see this lovely church and the inside is nice to visit after walking up the too too picturesque streets leading here. But for a real thrill, climb the tower. The stairs are not so much stairs as lines of wood, and you can see the many floors below you as you climb. Its a great view but this climb is definitely not for the faint of heart!

We visited this hilltop church in November on a Sunday around 10am. They have a service that apparently begins at 10:30 since people were arriving as we walked around the church. Many of the side altars are dimly lit so we weren’t able to enjoy some of the paintings to the fullest. The statues at the front of the church though are made from Carrara marble and are quite detailed. The center statue in the altar immediately to the right of the main altar is of St Euphemia. If you walk behind that altar, you will find the sarcophagus of St Euphemia along with wall paintings from her legend (lion’s licking her wounds in an amphitheater and her sarcophagus washing up on the shores of Rovinj).

Cathedral of St. Euphemia, Rovinj

The Cathedral of St. Euphemia is one of the most important monuments in Rovinj, Croatia. It is located on the top of the peninsula on which the city stands, and dominates the surrounding landscape with its imposing bell tower.

The cathedral was built in the 12th century, in Romanesque style, but was then renovated in Gothic style in the 14th century. The interior is filled with works of art, including a 16th-century inlaid pulpit, a 14th-century marble sarcophagus housing the relics of St. Euphemia, and an 18th-century pipe organ.

The bell tower of the cathedral is 62 meters high, and is one of the symbols of Rovinj. You can climb to its top to admire the splendid view of the city, the sea and the islands of Istria.

My review

I visited the Cathedral of St. Euphemia during a holiday in Rovinj. I was very impressed by the beauty and grandeur of the building.

The exterior of the cathedral is very impressive, with its Romanesque facade and its Gothic bell tower. The interior is equally fascinating, with its precious frescoes, its works of art and its pipe organ.

I also really enjoyed the view from the top of the bell tower. The city of Rovinj presents itself in all its beauty, with its colorful houses, its port and the blue sea.

I highly recommend visiting St. Euphemia's Cathedral to anyone in Rovinj. It's an experience that won't disappoint.

Occupying a high point in the city, this lovely place of worship is even more interesting because of the Saint whose name is commemorated in the name. Be sure to go behind the alter and gaze upon the stone coffin and read the story around it. Finally, do climb the tower, though be careful on the creaky wooden steps worn smooth through the ages. Lovely grounds overlook the town and the sea.

One of the major sites in town, this is the big church that is on top of the hill. It took us a while to find it as we walked in the wrong direction. It was a rainy day so not much sun coming through the stained glass, thus it was dark and gloomy inside. Some classic empire decorations, but hard to see. Somber.

The Sainte-Euphémie church is at the top of the hill in a green setting. On the outside, it is simple, rather austere.
Inside, there was a concert of religious (but modern) songs. The singers had beautiful voices.
The interior of the church is pretty with a beautiful altar. The statues on the canopy are majestic. Because of the concert, we were not able to get closer to admire the architectural details.

A leisurely stroll up the medieval paved streets leads you to this historic church. Luckily it had not been raining as it could have made it slippery to walk on.
The church itself is large with many ornate paintings, statues and the tomb of St. Euphemia herself. It is quite a dark place but the myriad of candles makes it more atmospheric.
There is a small stall selling religious souvenirs.
We did not venture up the bell tower but enjoyed the scenic views instead.

The Cathedral of Sant'Eufemia stands at the top of the islet on which the old town of Rovinj develops and overlooks a square which is essentially a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. The interior of the church is not unforgettable but still houses some elements of historical and artistic importance, such as the ancient sarcophagus in which the relics of the Saint are kept but also some interesting sculptural and pictorial works. Also note the Venetian-style bell tower, which among other things can be climbed. Overall, it is the main monument of the town and therefore a visit is almost a must.

The interior of the church is nice, especially the stained glass, but the views from the bell tower are incredible. The 187 wooden stairs are a little sketchy, though. If you have a big fear of heights you will not like the stairs. The views totally make the climb worthwhile.
