This quaint, small museum offered insight into Naxi culture, and Dumba religion. So much so, that we went on a visit to the Dumba Temple outside of Lijiang for a few hours. This is worth the visit.

Naxi Dongba Tribal Museum Is located adjacent to the Black Dragon Pool Park. Naxi originated from the Yi Tribe of the ancient Diqiang Group. The museum is extremely interesting looking at culture and language. Interestingly this ethnic group use a pictogram system for writing and it is very interesting looking at the appropriation of images and the research undertaken on the subject.

Li Lincan and American Joseph F Rock are pioneers in research in the area of Naxi Dongba culture and language.

Nice ink paintings on display. Photography allowed.

Allow about an hour to visit the museum. Sadly no English guidebook available.

So the men don't work but do make wood carvings - make sure you see the big one near the toilets.
The Dongba is an intriguing culture and I was surprised how interesting this small museum was. Costumes, paintings, stories, relief maps - there is something here for almost any adult. A guide made this worth seeing

I found the museum of the history of the Naxi people quite interesting with English explanations of the animist Dongba religion. An explanation was made of the efforts to preserve the pictographic language, customs, and writings. Displays showed lodgings, rituals, customs, and paper making for use by the priests.

Until visiting this museum, I didn't know they used hieroglyphics like the Egyptians! They compare all three scripts (with classical Chinese) and it's very cool. It is located at the Northern entrance of the black dragon pool. If you do not wish to pay the entrance to the park, you can easily go around it since the museum is outside the park and free.

Free museum with some English descriptions of the Naxi Dongba Culture. Particularly fascinating to see the ancient hieroglyphic script. Small, and easy to navigate.

This relatively new museum is at the entrance to the Black Dragon Pool park and is free to enter. It is designed to show the domba culture of the local people, and does a very good job at this. There are very good examples and explanations of the Domba picturegram language and characters, similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics but much simpler literal and easier to understand. Also other features of Domba culture. There are many explanations in English so it is easy for tourists to understand. Allow about 1-2 hours.

I think the place we visited is new because nothing like the photos here. A great insight into the local Lijiang culture and religion . The explanation of the naxi scrip was interesting too and made me realise how simple signs can get a message across

It is at the Black Dragon Pool Park's northern entrance, and is worth a visit if you have the time. The square hall at the back of the museum have collections of antique paintings also.
