Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

This ancient town 's hostels or hotels rate are cheaper than Lijiang, not as gorgeous but with a smaller entrance fee. Not too much activities, smaller in scale, cheaper prices in gifts, food. Easy to take bus to other attractions.

Part of this town is developed into Minsu and nice little cafes. I like the streams. Water is crystal clear. I like the peace and quiet here. In fact I prefer this to the Lijiang ancient city. It's less commercialised.

much quieter that the ancient town. although this quietness does offer some benefits, i feel it wast as nice and didn't offer the variety of the larger ancient town. Expect to spend a couple hours here only

Walk from Grand Hyatt Lijiang city hotel to SUHE ancient town and take about 30 minutes. No entrance fee. Quite down trodden town. Not much and selling same type souvenirs and tea. Have few restaurants but dare not try eat out as unsure what to order and it doesn't look clean from my point of view. It might be too... More

I suggest you to visit this town that in my opinion is better than Lijiang because has something more traditional and particular, less crowded and you can rejoice the culture and history of the town. Lijiang is very crowded and full of shops that will let you lose the feeling of rejoicing the culture and history of the town. If... More

We stayed in Shuhe for three days in late December. Prior to that we were in Dayan for three days as well. I prefer Shuhe so much more than the Dayan old town. Its less commercialized and more relaxing. The narrow streets are running all around the town together with the cold water stream from the Yu Long mountain glazier.... More

Shuhe Ancient Town is not as commercial as Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe still keeps the original characters of old town, it was the important stop or resting town before Tea-Horse old Road (茶马古道), these days we call it as logistic centres. Very interesting place to walk around, you will see many people doing modern activities, such as drinking coffee and... More

We went to Shuhe expecting an authentic old town experience and instead we got a smaller version of Lijiang. I don't think the buildings were authentic and it was full of the same shops and restaurants throughout. Better to spend your time elsewhere!

A much smaller scale of Lijiang Ancient Town...took bus #6 (only RMB1) from the bus stop outside of entrance near the Big Water Wheel. More peaceful and picturesque than Lijiang Ancient Town where one can spend a leisurely 2 hours in this Shuhe town. The stream running through the town and the pond is quite an attraction.
