Overview
More
Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

Shuhe was my personal favorite place in Li Jiang— less crowded than the bigger Old Town, just as historically rich, and even more beautiful. Don’t miss out on trying the new Compass Café that just opened over the stone bridge... absolutely delicious food, friendly staff,...More

Nice place to walk and enjoy the not so crowded street and quaint architecture. Lots of shops still but not as commercialised and dense as the old town.

We prefer this to the Old Town of Lijiang which looks too 'polished' and definitely commercialized. We visited 22 April. Not many tourists and we were able to enjoy the peace and explore

Same shops and experience as Lijiang's old town with a few less toursits. Not any more authentic. Baisha's a lot better for that.

This was my favourite town while staying in Lijiang. Walking round the streets which weren’t as crowded and had plenty of scenery and things to see. Very peaceful and scenic, there are also lots of places to eat and drink including the odd western style...More

Nice story with the dragons and all. Cool to see the source of the canal that goes through to the old town. Interesting to see the morning warm ups and tai chi. Very peaceful and relaxing walk with lots of history. Easy and quick stop.

We’ve been living in China for a few years and traveled around a bit but Shuhu was a total surprise. This place reminded us more of Japan than China. Everything is clean and lovely. The streets are well designed and every little detail is well...More

Much like Lijiang but less crowded. Don't forget to visit the small Buddhist temple on the left side of the river. Small but very passionate.

And a river runs through it surrounded by trees and flowers. Shops are varied, horses with and without carts for seeing the sights stroll by, and street vendors tease you with the smells of roasting corn, Chinese sausage, and local foods. Stores offer souvenirs and...More

Despite being a peak holiday period whenever we’ve wandered down to Shuhe it’s been lovely and certainly not overcrowded - we’d highly recommend a visit!
