Lots of beautiful views and nice to have the streams running through town with lots of colourful flowers. Ate some great food.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2024
- MayswchenSingapore, Singapore402 contributions2nd visit yet still very breathtaking & mesmerizing effect! This is a really lovely ancient town. Must see for all visitors! If you can spare more time, it can take at least 3 to 4 hours. Many locals come here to take photos, Young ones will make the effort to dress up in their minority groups, having make up done & dressing up beautifully! A sight to behold when photos taken by professional photographers. Setting is breath taking...loving every aspect of this ancient town. There are many different shops, restaurants & local fare available, no worries of lack of food here!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 March 2024
- JGMalaysia117 contributionsAwesome charming old town of LijiangBe prepared to get lost in the maze of lanes. The old town is a charming quaint place. Lovely scenic instagramable places with every turn and corner. Better by day than at night. It takes the effort of a whole community to maintain this place.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 March 2024
- MarissaSingapore, Singapore119 contributionsBeautiful Lijiang Ancient TownI love Lijiang ancient town. It’s colorful, bustling, a lot to see and especially beautiful when it’s litted at night. Make sure you stay one night as 2-hours walk is not enough. I highly recommend Intercontinental Lijiang ancient town resort as its side door is the start of Lijiang old town South Gate. Very convenient. It’s quiet with modern facilities yet in an ancient Chinese architecture design that blends well with the surrounding ancient town. It has wide spread of breakfast too. If you are lucky, you will be able to see Jade Dragon Snow mountain on a clear day from the breakfast restaurant. At dusk, don’t forget to go next to Seven Colors Chinese restaurant to see the overall view of the ancient city from the top. It’s beautiful when all is litted.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2024
- Allan & Amy TEdmonton, Canada379 contributionsbeautiful old townThis is one of the most beautiful old town in china at night amongst all the other old towns we have visited. We were here 15 years ago,and things have changed drastically. The town is vibrant, colorful, and comes a live after dark. There are lots of souvenir shops, eatery which has sprung up. In addition near the main square there are now bars with local bands and singers which add to the night time atmosphere. Most of the old houses, temples, city gates are also lit up at night. Remember the last time we visited we almost get lost, now understanding the system and the direction and instructions,it is easy to find your way. Just follow the path of the river from east to west you will get your sense of orientation. We love it and spend two nights and one morning strolling the street just to feel the difference between night and day!!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2024
- Hui Ling GohSingapore, Singapore8 contributionsBeautiful quaint old townThis is the best old town I have been too . Apparently, it is one of the only two unesco old towns in China - according to the tour guide . The two beautiful streams , stoned tiles , spider web layout , a good variety of shops , scenic view from the top all contributed to a positive experience . One downside is the products there are at least 50% more expensive than shun hee old townVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2024

I stayed at a hotel within the old town & thus walking distance to maximise my visiting time. Yet to pay attention, no cars to get in the old town and all luggages demand hotel staff to come and pick up at gate of the town (RMB 5 / piece of luggage).
Overall, I spent day time for shopping, they got good originality shops (from 納西族) who sell tea leaves, beef jerky, leather etc.... It’s good to get a bit familiar with the complex streets & allies.
Night time is even more excited with people dancing at central plaza, bars and restaurants with life bans that make it even more attractive.
It was a very nice experiences & stays! Last tips, there is no free lunch, all nice spots (overview of the city) are occupied by restaurants / hostels. Get yourself a drink to enjoy the view & take some photos.

I visited here on a weekend in mid-January (just before Chinese New Year) and the atmosphere was perfect (enough people to make it lively without being overcrowded). The buildings are beautiful, especially those alongside the stream with Chinese lanterns hanging alongside. The place is huge and very easy to get lost! Entry is free. Would recommend going in the evening and going for a drink in one of the bars at the top of the hill, where you can get a view over the whole of the old town. Would recommend the Chamayage Bar (茶马雅阁酒吧) - good for either a coffee or an alcoholic drink.

I visited a few old towns in China, but this one has to be my favorite one to date. During my time in Lijiang, I didn't even bother going to the city because the old town was so much fun not to mention that the food was incredible.
While morning are very quiet as shops open rather late, the evenings were far from boring. The bar street sure made for some nice evenings while the afternoons allowed me and my friend to visit more of Old Town while trying out different food (such as tofu ice cream (don't judge until you try it)), Chinese wraps and of course the flowers cake. As for dinner, the ribs hot pot is fantastic!
I shouldn't forget to mention that the buildings are beautiful, and I strongly recommend you check the small alleys as you might be surprised by what you may see.

There are some good Chinese restaurants in and around this area. It is pleasant to walk around in during the day but there are lots of shops selling the same things (flower cakes, silver, djembes, etc.). We loved the look and feel of some of the areas.
It is hard to avoid the crowds and congrstion after 6 pm and around 9 pm it gets pretty crazy in there with loud music, clubs and bars. If you're looking for a good time at night I'm sure you'd find it here.
It is a little bit like a maze and we found the signage was lacking because we got stuck a couple of times. Be careful with the shops as quite a few font have prices displayed and we felt we were overcharged a couple of times relative to what we are used to paying for some items.
The registration to get in for foreigners took us around 5 minutes and we had to show them several different health codes. They made sure we wore out masks at the one gate but let locals roam maskless. Once registered make sure you take a picture so you can show at any entrance to get in easily the next time you go through.

We love everything about this old town. It has been restored beautifully with many hotels, restaurants, shops, bars and etc. but still has its old-world charm. Sort of like the "Venice" of China. The weather was on the colder side in December, but it was not crowded and things are relatively inexpensive.

You can live with blue sky with white cloud weather at slow pace in the city. There are night lives with good Chinese bands too. Good mix of life can be found here. People here are friendly and honest, relatively helpful to tourists.

Lijiang Ancient City was my favourite among all the ancient towns and cities that I had visited in Yunnan. The narrow lanes and old architecture are reminders of how people lived in ancient times. The whole area was a maze. The view from Lion Hill showed that the area was not as big as I had thought. But walking through the lanes searching for particular shops or restaurants proved that it is justifiable being called a city. It felt much bigger than its actual area. Thank goodness for GPS. We needed to use our GPS to locate our friends who were waiting for us at our meeting point. This is definitely worth a visit.

We stayed a number of nights in Lijiang and loved it. There are many streets to wander around with plenty of restaurants and shops to browse. There are hundreds of places to stay and many are quaint with nice courtyards. It is a very relaxing place to enjoy a slow pace of life. It is also a great base for exploring the surrounding area and taking day trips to places like Yulong Snow mountain and LuGu Lake. Highly recommend a stop in Lijiang on your next trip to Yunnan.

I want to go Lijiang old town from Lijiang railway station.
What's the bus number bring me there?
thanks!

Getting from Lijiang train station to Old city: Wait for bus No.4 at the bus stop in front of the train station. The bus will take you to the main gate of Old city (simplified Chinese: 丽江古城; traditional Chinese: 麗江古城; pinyin: Lìjiāng Gǔchéng). The bus costs ¥1.

Greetings. I am planning for next April and appreciate if anyone has a good driver cum guide that I can engage. No need to be English speaking and please share costs too. Thanks much.

We had a good guide in Lijiang who went around with us and she organised the driver. Our costs included the hotel which she booked for us, so may not be as relevant if you are doing that yourself. If you would like her details, please get in touch.

I would like to know of private tour contact to book private car from Lijiang to Shangrila on Nov 2. I prefer to book ahead of my arrival if possible.
What is the price for this trip if it is just Lijiang to Shangrila. What if I take a break enroute to Tiger Leap for 2 hours
Regards

My boyfriend and I were looking around for tours and all of them are really expensive and we didn't book at first. Then we stumbled upon a really nice spa, called Eden Spa and we spoke to the owner who has lived there and travels a lot. She introduced us to a friend of hers who we booked a private car with for the next day to Tiger Leaping Gorge. If you want the contact you could message me privately and I can give you her contact via wechat. If not, good luck and have enjoy your trip!

Read lots of different reviews about Lijiang. If I want to skip it what other similar place in China would you recommend?
Written 19 July 2015
Lijiang is without a doubt one of China's genuine highlights, and I think that it would be a real mistake to miss it out. There are only two or three main throroughfares that are busy, while the rest of the many maze-like alleyways and winding lanes are almost ignored by the vast majority of tourists. There are hidden temples, romantic waterways and amazing architecture to be discovered once you venture off the beaten tracks. Get a guide who knows the maze of back alleys well, and you will be impressed at what you can discover. Even the busy main drags are a fascinating insight into contemporary Chinese culture, and they are a great opportunity to meet fellow tourists from China. In Lijiang everybody is on holiday in one of their dream destinations and so they are much more friendly than the miserable, downtrodden populations of Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. It is a rare chance to interact and make friends with ordinary Chinese people.
My own favourite thing about Lijiang is the choice of amazing guesthouses and their wonderful interior designs. Nowhere on earth has such a wide choice and the listings on Tripadvisor represent only a fraction of the accommodation that is available. This is such a departure of the boring plain four wall tourist hotels that we are usually subjected too. I could write a book about things to see, do and experience in and around Lijiang. It might be all be little daunting for some travellers but it is definitely worth the effort.

Hi I am plan ning to go to Lijiang in May and can someone pls recommend any local travel agents(english speaking) that I can book to go to
Shangrila and Snow mountain Leaping Tiger gorge

I highly recommend Keith Lyons - his email is pretty much his name. Just google it or he is on trip adviser. He provided us with English speaking, local guides that are very knowledgeable about the area and also guided us to Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La. He booked us accommodations in Lijiiang and our guide arranged for all the others during our trip as well as transportation. Our guide took us places we would never have seen otherwise and knew many of the local people. They are the best.
