The "Dzong Fortress", more commonly known as "Gyantse Dzong", dominates the landscape around this small town in the mountains of Tibet. Looking from town or from famous "Palkhor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa", one cannot imagine how important this old fortress has been along the centuries. Its original walls date as far back as the 9th Century, the main fortifications were... More

Absolutely great views over the town and surrounding countryside, and that's why you should come, not for the fortress building itself.

The fortress looks impressive from a distance and provides an excellent back drop for photos of the town and monastery. We never went inside but climbed to the fortress for the excellent views over the monastery and surrounding town.

Unfortunately it was closed for renovations during our visit, but it makes a magnificent sight perched on the top of a barren mountain. Go for the view - worth the 10 minutes detour.

We did not climb it as it was closed at the time (also, I'm not sure we were up to it, still suffering a little from altitude sickness), but it was lovely just to look at from the plaza below. Also, when you visit Palgor Chorten there is a magnificent view of the fortress from its back side. Very impressive.

A spectacular site itself but very few people try to walk on the top. The altitude of 4200 m is not a joke. I did it once and I could not sleep all the night from the effort and altitude symptoms. Good luck!

This place is definitely worth to visit. If you are tired from the Monasteries you have to visit this place. Realy nice. Some refubrishment was also done. From the top you can enjoy nice view over Gyantse.
