Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is an oasis in the middle of Birmingham. The folks at Ruffner have reclaimed over a 1,000 acres and created miles of wonderful and scenic hiking trails. The also have a nature center with education exhibits. It's so convenient because it's in the middle of the city but you feel like your miles away when your... More

A lot of fun. Easy trail and a lot of area to cover. Beautiful views of nature and the city. It's amazing that it's tucked away there. My friend and I got turned around and it was getting dark and closing. Our friends were waiting in the car and for some reason we couldn't get them on the phone. We... More

My wife and I enjoyed hiking the trails. The trails were just long and challenging enough to give us a good workout.

My wife and I were looking for a nice place to walk outdoors and went here. Honestly don't be turned off by the area outside the park. Once in the park we found a lot of nice hikes and people to talk to. There was also a lot of locals walking their pets and we had a great time on... More

Ruffner mountain is a perfect escape if you'd like an afternoon hike or visit an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We spent less than two hours there and felt renewed. There are clean and accessible bathrooms, and it's minutes away from downtown Birmingham. One caution though- make sure you pay attention to where you are!... More

There are multiple entrances to the park. It consists of highland, mountainous (by Alabama standards) terrain, as well as lowland swampy areas. It's interesting to observe the transition between the two. There's also a few hidden treasures to be found here, but I'm not divulging any secrets.Get a map from the visitor station before you go out hiking, even better,... More

Was the perfect morning hike. 3 miles round trip with the kids. Worth the view and nice picnic area near parking. Saw lots of people with dogs on the trail.

I used to take my sons when they were young along with our Lab, Gus. We climb to the top and have a picnic. Now, I've taken my grandsons. We love it and you will too.

Love coming here. You can do trails from a 1/4 mile up to 5 miles. The trails are well-maintained, not a lot of over-growth. Its definitely worth a visit if you are a hiker.

Ruffner Mountain is a treasure. It is relatively easy to find, centrally located, and there is no admission cost. You can stop in for a quick hike before shopping in the area, or spend the entire day wandering through the varyingly difficult trails. There are shorter trails for those who don't want to really exert themselves, and long winding trails... More
