Most come to Luoyang for the Longmen Caves and they are a must see, but the White Horse Temple tops that experience for me. Apart from anything, it's a bargain at just RMB35 to enter. It is quite a long way East of Luoyang, but the 56 and 58 buses go all the way there from the centre for just RMB1.5. Plus you can get here by bus directly from Longmen and vice versa. The temple itself is tranquil and truly beautiful, with a lot to see in various pagodas and pavilions. However, there are extensive grounds offering many sights. To the west of the temple is a fairly new area of "international" temples, where they've recreated a Thai, Burmese and Indian buddhist complex. These cover a very wide area and there's a lot to see. To the East of the temple is a quieter park area, with several temples, pagodas and pavilions to explore, all of which seem to attract more locals and tourists seem to miss. Separating all the various areas are beautiful, tranquil gardens and ponds. It's a really lovely area with a lot to see for an incredibly low entrance fee.

The White Horse Temple is not so bad. The Hall of the Heavenly Kings is impressive with a smiling buddha and four gigantic kings. The history is also interesting, involving two Indian buddhist monks arriving on white horses and providing the first Chinese language Buddhist sutra. The temple is historically important since it was the first officially sanctioned Buddhist temple in China and it is still being used today by monks and adherents.
The bus 56 to get here from Luoyang train station is an absolute horror show though. It is hard to find (it starts south of the train station on Jinguyuan Lu not one of the bus lots on Daonan Lu). It is jam packed. And it makes upwards of 20 stops so it's not exactly an express bus. Avoid it if you can!

There is so much to see. Everywhere you turn is a delight for the eyes and spirit. Each temple and altar is gorgeous, and it just goes and goes- gardens, temples from different countries, museums. Definitely a lot for your entry fee. Somewhat crowded, even on a weekday, but it was still summer holiday.

We went on Chinese New Year, and it was PACKED. Very memorable.
Outside the gate they have stalls where they sell all manner of incense, toys and souvenirs. Inside, there was a huge pile of incense burning at each new courtyard. The courtyards are beautiful, as are the buildings. It's the oldest buddhist temple in China, so the history is impressive. There are several new buildings-- some are gifts from Thai and Indian Buddhists, I believe. We didn't take any sort of formal tour. The bathroom was one of the filthiest I've encountered in my travels-- it was just too busy to handle the crowds... I won't go into it (eek!).. so maybe just use a bathroom before you arrive.
There are also gift-shops inside where you can buy statues and talismans. And once again, they don't get a lot of Westerners, so people kept asking to take photos with us.
Just FYI: Our driver spoke English and warned us to bring almost nothing with us, because we would probably get pick-pocketed. He told us to wear our small backpack on the front so we could see where all the pockets were at all times. He was protective of us, and also walked us to the gate-- shooing away people trying to sell us things or men yelling at us for parking money or kids trying to get into our bags. So be aware if you're headed there on a busy day. (I've experienced this on other trips before, it's just nice to be aware.)

From Longmen Grottoes, we took bus 53, then changed to 56 or 58 to reach White Horse temple. 2 hours in the temple visit should suffice. They collected admission CNY35 per person. The toilet facilities and facilities (gardens) are dilapidated. I wonder how they spent the revenue since this is a popular tourist attraction.
Adjoining the temple, are Buddhist Temples built by Thailand and Myanmar. I have been to Myanmar, pictures of the Temples in Myanmar are inviting.
We took the bus back into town for our meals.

The White Horse Temple has historical interest, it is peaceful away from the main buildings, and is beautiful. It is the first Buddhist temple in China (although the buildings have been rebuilt since its founding). Many of the guests are here to worship rather than as tourists. Be sure to visit the area past the main temple area that includes the Qiyun pagoda. It is much less crowded and quite beautiful. We traveled there on Luoyang city bus, so it was inexpensive and convenient.

White Horse Temple is supposedly the place of Buddhism in China. The king had invite two Indian monks to bring scripture to China. These two monks are interred on either side of the temple. The temple is not the original but rebuilt on the original ground. However in addition to the temple there are three other Buddhist temples built as gifts from India, Myanmar and Thailand. The ground floor of the Myanmar temple is a fantastic little museum with embroidered Buddhist paintings. The embroidery is all on gold corded thread embroidery. The works are gorgeous and with incredible details.

A place where new meets old and features different countries' temples with distinct architectural perspective. Most spectacular should be the temple from India with its incredibly big dome.

Best to take the bus (RMB1.5) from Luoyang. Check with Baidu.com ( Chinese equivalent of google map) for the relevant bus to get there.
A lovely, calm and peaceful place. Surprisingly clean too! Only downside is to have to bear with and know how to step away when people spit close to you ( 1:5 F:M).

Are the new temples donated by Thailand, Myanmar and India at this location and open to the public?
What is the ticket cost for adults and children?
Is there a place to leave luggage since we want to come straight from the Luoyang station? (not the Longmen station)
Thank you
