We took a Xing Ping bound bus (from the Yangshuo's main bus station) and got off midway at Fuli town to visit the farmer's market. We asked the driver beforehand and he let us off just outside the market. Even for an Asian, it was an eye opener. Some of the highlights included: a tribal medicine man who was selling a cure-all potion made from carcasses of turtles, snakes and other animals; the poultry seller would slaughter the live bird of your choice on the spot; the barbers would offer a cut and wash in the open, hawkers offering brooms made from local grass; a tradesman selling live pups for ??. The locals are somewhat shy and even though they may not mind the presence of outsiders (tourists), some may not like their pictures been taken. So if you have to take pictures or record, do so very discreetly or ask before taking them. A word of advise: The public toilets do not have a flushing system and "scent" can be quite overpowering. Use the ones in your hotel before setting out on this excursion. Another word of advise: Visit the market only if you are prepared to go with an open mind and do not sneer especially in their presence. This is, after all, their rural market and we are all guests in their backyard.

The ancient part of the town is literally one street long, with shops selling artworks and fan-making shops. Probably not worth the trip if it weren't for the local river crossing we took for RMB1 one way, which allowed us to chat with the locals and ask lots of questions. They recommended trying the pumpkin flower which was AMAZINGLY good!

Biked with a guide from Shaungtan northeast of Yangshuo to Fuli Market. Very interesting noodle lunch and cakes. Glad to have the guide as little English was spoken.
Actually, took a ferry across the river and parked the bikes with a local house.
Pleasant day and less touristy stuff. More of a local's market feel.

I enjoyed the market and do feel it has maintained its authenticity even though tourists flood in. The markets had everything you can imagine for sale, but I really enjoyed walking down the old streets and learning about the red couplets, thresholds and culture. We bought some fans from a very nice lady who I'm pretty sure wasn't overselling.

Fuli is in many ways an authentic little town in the sense that it has little for tourists other than sporadic souvenir purchases. You won't find quiet cafes to sit in, but you will be regularly called on to buy things from street sellers. I got the feeling this was a quick pit-stop for tour groups, and that the locals weren't doing very well out of the tourists who descended.
We biked over from Yangshuo, which was a great ride, but there wasn't really anywhere convenient to rest when we got there.

Visited Fuli town while on the way to XingPing. The market is a nice place to visit if you like to buy some nuts, dry snacks, dried berries or fresh fruits etc. but prices were not that cheap (handful of Goji berries was 10 RMB).

A great feel of local culture and peaceful surrounding. Located just next to Li River and one of the pick up point for Bamboo Raft ride. Friendly locals at morning market. Understand that the locals do not lock their home main entrance door all year round as it is a safe and secured town. A must visit town if you like to have a feel of village life and local cultures.

My boyfriend and I came here for the afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by how great it was! Walking around the quaint old side streets we were invited into the locals' fan workshops and were greeted by many friendly locals in their front rooms! Obviously it is quite small but the many arty shops and picturesque surroundings make it a perfect place to spend some time in real China away from the touristy Yangshuo. We'd especially recommend the Peng Family shop, the artwork there was so stunning and it was so interesting watching them make the fans in front of us! It's a really sweet family business with all generations involved and we got some really unique pictures and fans at really good prices.
I'd really recommend Fuli if you've got the time, its very accessible from Yangshuo, just 15 minutes on scooter or the number 3 bus, and you can pick up some really unique works.

The town is pleasant if a bit " rural run down ".
Not really a tourist town which adds to its appeal.
Lovely stretch of river close by.
Fans were a bit underwhelming.

We rode to Fuli on an electric bike (took about 30 mins) from Yangshuo. Once we arrived there were your typical tourist stalls selling scarves, paintings and fans etc..outside. This street leads around to the river. You can get a raft boat here (but this didn't really interest us). We walked around the buildings a few times as we didn't find much to look at. There are quite a few only run down traditional buildings, but they also have had a lot of development added to them. Overall a bit disappointed with the visit as there wasn't much to see (apart from the obvious beauty of Yangshuo). If you are particularly interested in ancient towns I would recommend the water towns near Suzhou, these are very picturesque.
