`Pasar Malam'

I was expecting to see a wholesale market or a wet market when I arrived at the entrance of Shazhou Market in Dunhuang Downtown but it turned out to be more of a `Pasar Malam'. It resembled those street hawker stalls and night market in Malaysia. Pasar means market in the Malay language. On one corner, there were those stalls selling fresh vegetables. fruits and meats and on the main street aisle were the rows of stalls selling souvenirs, dry fruit stuff and herbs, art and craft pieces. Right among them were the rows of shop restaurants selling specialties and delicious delicacies. It is a great place to chill for the night and do marketing for the locals in the morning. The market is opened quite late in the morning. When I was there at 7 am taking the public shuttle bus to the train station, the whole market was still enveloped in darkness and not a single cart stall was in operation. Instead, I had my morning breakfast of a bowl of warm and spicy beef noodles with vegetables and egg at a restaurant beside the market. My hostel was right beside the aisle of night market stalls and in the cold autumn weather, I found it very relaxing and great pleasure to stroll among the cart stalls looking at how the artisans carved their art and craft pieces while enjoyed listening to the songs and music that were played by some of the cart operators. It was a different type of sensation from patronizing the night markets of China mega cities, here in the coldness of the autumn night, I, a solo traveler felt my presence in this distant oasis town with a sense of peace and solitary quietness as the music of Dunhuang resonated in the air. There is no price haggling, no shouting, no harassing. Just you and the rows of carts and their attractive products and you can enjoy your own sweet time slowly digest, slowly appreciate, no hurry, no pushing, no irritating noise. Just calmness and peacefulness pervade the atmosphere. Do not miss this market especially the night market. I would consider this as one of the `wonders' of Dunhuang after Mogao Caves and the Echoing Sand Dunes.

In the market, there are restaurants, restaurants, and kiosks. You can choose to eat as you please. Gather food from every region in one place. We like Mala Tang. Each bowl is 20Y and we almost die from eating it.
Tip1: During the day, the market is only half open. It gets lively in the early evening.

Dunhuang is a quiet place during the day, but that all changes in this market at night. There are local artisans, dried fruit and nuts and different flavors of foods you can or cannot find elsewhere in China. I'd go back and I hope I do!
