Loved this vista - looks exactly like a computer screensaver!

The birds, the colours, the view - a really specially landscape in South America.

This salt flat is truly magnificent and one can do an easy day trip from San Pedro De Atacama. Located in the midst of natural desert surroundings, one will be able to see lots of flamingos. Certainly worth visiting.

Very interesting topography. Different hikes for different people. Beautiful sand dunes. Some of the trails quite narrow.

A must do. We drove there with a rental Grand Vitara with 4-wheel drive. I’d recommend a car like this, it’s impossible to do the whole path with a regular car, as you will need to drive through sandy desert with no roads. I had to get into low range all wheel lock, but mostly because we decided to stop in the middle of the hill. Amazing experience both the location and the driving in the desert, of course if you’re a keen driver. There are no signs, but there are plenty of tire marks from others, so you shouldn’t get lost. We didn’t meet a single other car along the way, the place was empty. We followed a trail on an app called Wikiloc (Salar de Tara a San Pedro de Atacama by Creuza). It was very straightforward.

A long drive to get there but worth it for the most amazing and picturesque view. It's a fair altitude.

We drove all around this area, and have never seen salt beds like it. The setting is unreal as the colours of the mountains change as the sun moves around.

We rented a car for the weekend and did a self-drive. Awesome drive! We saw so many different landscapes and a few llamas. I became susceptible to the thinner oxygen and ended up with nausea. My husband had to pull the car over multiple times on the ride to and from San Pedro. Still worth it though! 😂

Such a nice view over the salar, the red rocks and the mountains and vulcanos around it. Worth the visit but be prepared because of the altitude.

We visited in February just after the rain which washed the salt clean. Totally amazing to see the formations and to climb the big sand dune to get perspective. Pictures do not do it justice.

We did a self drive up to Salar de Tara the day before we made the trip up to the geysers at El Tatio as it is a good way to acclimatise for the latter. The salt flats are around 4000m above sea level (the geysers are around 4300m above sea level).

This is a trip up more to connect with nature than anything else. The landscape is vast, drastic, cold, extreme, harsh yet colourful and surprising in how much life it supports. You are sure to run into vicuna and maybe flamingos up here.

Its a place which makes you really want to capture in photographs but one which is so vast that it is hard to!
