I'm so glad we were able to see this amazing place before it potentially disappears.

Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the decline of the pools here isn't to do with lack of care by the local community who manage this site, and is everything to do with the tens of years of drought that Chile is suffering.

The community custodians are doing their best to keep the site as pristine as possible, and are kind and welcoming in difficult and sad circumstances.

This is an incredible place, even reduced in scope as it is. Sure, if you want the Instagram photos that people were able to take when all seven pools were full and azure, you're not going to get that. Is the road out to the site corrugated dirt? Yes. Is it a long drive? Yes. However, the chance to stand on the vast salt plain and see the might of the surrounding mountains, or even better to float in an incredibly salty bright blue pool while looking at the vast sky and the mountains shimmering through the desert heat haze is truly humbling.

Knowing that this community has invested in making this site into something for people to visit and is then in peril of losing their special site and their investment to climate change, in conjunction with the perspective of being so tiny in such a massive, unforgiving landscape makes this a place worthy of a visit.

Note, as I've said this landscape is hostile. There is no fresh water, there are no showers. You will be caked in salt when you come out of the pool. You're not allowed to wear suncream in the pool. You do need to prepare for this trip. It's not like the photos that were posted a few years ago. It's still worth going

The Baltinache Pools are at the end of 50 kilometres of shocking, rocky, bone-rattling road. Of the 3 main pools in the complex, only one remains in the picture postcard form you see on the internet. The other two have been ruined by the owners charging people to swim in them. So instead of a turquoise blue crystal-clear pool, they have been turned opaque green. People come here to float in the intensely salt water. But human contamination has destroyed the original charm of the pools. It’s tough for the owners. Do people want to drive such a long distance over a corrugated road to see a lovely crystalline pool or swim in what used to be one? Presently, at least there is still one pure pool left. Let’s hope the owners don’t decide to let people swim in that one or then they will all be spoiled.
Is it worth the long arduous drive? Maybe you should check before you go depending on your reason to visit, just to make sure there is still something worth seeing when you get there. The blue pool is exquisite but it is a tough drive to see it.

Our trip included Bolivia so we wanted to see something more unique in San Pedro area. My local friend recommended checking it out. We were glad we went there by joining a tour! The view was breathtaking plus we were able to jump into one of the lagoons! We were floating as if we were in the Dead Sea! Really amazing experience!

Not worth the drive! There are seven pools and you can only swim in the first one. Which was small and the water was not clear. The one that is all over Instagram, the clearest one, is no longer open to swim in. Not worth the hype and the long, bumpy road. Skip this and go to the swimming lagoon 25 mins from San Pedro.

Not worth the arduous long trip on gravel roads, even if nice to look at. Lucky we dd not pay the additional tour fee (had our own car)
But they should provide beach shoes for the masochist (the water is, at least in April, icy.) that want to go in the water . Trying to walk to the water barefoot on the very sharp stones is very painful around the small pond (you can dip in the bigger one only if you are with a tour - but crowded)

visited it on the afternoon tour (2:30PM) - the drive there was just over an hour. I would personally not drive there - not worth the risk of the flat tire in the scorching heat. The pools are busy (especially the last one which is bigger). We actually liked the first one which was mostly empty around 5PM. My only gripe is that there is not enough time given at the pools - 1.5 hours feels a bit rushed...

Lagunas Baltinache is at best average. It is at a short driving distance from San Pedro De Atacama. Swimming was not permitted on the day I visited. The surroundings are picturesque. May give it a miss, after having seen several other lagoons in the vicinity.

Early in our trip to Atacama we had an afternoon free and having read some reviews decided to give Lagunas Baltinache a try. Without a doubt for the 5 of us - it was one of our absolute highlights!

Firstly the drive. Yes it’s long, bumpy and not massively enjoyable but it’s flat and relatively easy to drive. I wouldn’t say a 4x4 is needed, you would just need to drive slower! It took us just over an hour from San Pedro.

Once you arrive there are 7 pools of which you can swim in the first and last. Swimming in the salt lakes on its own is an incredible experience. However once you add in the amazing scenery and colours it makes it’s a very unique and super fun activity. Our three children (ages 5,8,10) loved it.

One thing worth noting, completely unplanned, we got there around 15:00 and it was virtually empty. However at 16:00 suddenly it filled up hugely with tours so if you are able to self drive - worth planning around that!

Salty oasis in the desert of Atacama. This day didn’t foreshadow anything unexpected until we decided to make a detour from the highway and visit Laguna Baltinache on our tiny car. Little did we know about the road conditions and what will happen in the next few hours - after the bumpiest ride of our lifetime we reached the laguna and it was definitely worth all the vibration on the road. The views are spectacular, the water is refreshing and makes you float on the surface - great experience! On our way back we learned that when it rains in the desert the roads turn into muddy rivers (watch out for the weather when planning to visit) - fortunately we were equipped with a mighty little car that apparently can drive off-roads like there is no tomorrow. You can drive this road on a compact/economy car - just be prepared and make sure you have an extra tire, we saw few SUVs changing tires as we drove along.
