We were staying in Puerto Varas but had a hire car so decided to do this trip to Chiloe Island as it was recommended by our tour company and in the Rough Guide. You have to get the car ferry across to the island which is about a 35 minute ride but the ferries are frequent and very well organised... More

If I could do this over again, I would have enjoyed taking local buses or hitchhiking or renting a car and doing it on my own. Because of time constraints, I went with a tour, called CHILOE VIAJES --offices in Ancud: Mercado Principal , and the Large Bus Terminal--- which made it easy, but I felt I was just tossing... More

When you arrive here you can see the small boats that will take you out to the little islands in the bay. I wondered whether we would get wet accessing the boats. I needn't have had any concerns, they have a wonderful contraption. An elevated metal people carrier. You all climb on to this and then are pulled by the... More

Visited 16 Nov as an alternate to Castro/Dalcahue tour. From the mainland ferry, run was west through Ancud abt 30-40 mins to the western location of Islets of Punihuil. Stunning countryside and river seascapes, think Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. And on a stunning sunny and warm day as we had, doubly wonderful. Cheap (USD15) 40-odd min boat ride... More

I've seen penguins in various places before, and this isn't the world's best penguin colony, but it's still a lot of fun. The boat operators seem to coordinate with each other and the service is well organized. We were there in late November, and you didn't need a reservation; we just drove ourselves to this small beach town 20 minutes... More

Via the "Titanic III", we ventured out to see the penguin colony in Punihuil, Chiloe. The boat trip brings you up close to the birds and penquins who live on the rocks. Make time to eat lunch following the boat trip at the local restaurant on the beach. Check out the beautiful carved dining chairs with penguin backs!

Very short ride (1/2 hour or so) very close to shore to see three islands to see penguins – the Magellan and Humboldt. There were quite a few penguins to see so worth it, especially if you’ve never seen any before. However, if you have seen penguins, you may be disappointed (unless you just want to see a different variety).... More

Tourism hasn't been well developed near Ancud on Chiloe so any good attraction is overbooked and that is the case here. Some people who had reserved on our tour were left on shore due to overbooking. There are too many people looking for good tourist experiences and the Ancud area of Chiloe has been over market for what is available.... More

We were really looking forward to seeing the penguins but the port authority had cancelled all the boats due to windy weather so could only look at nearest islet from beach with a telescope which was not ideal

quite the experience getting carted into the boat so that you don't get your feet wet... lol. The islands are well looked after and you can see that the people take care in the impact of the area, though there are quite a few days trips the still have limited the amount of boats allowed out all day. The guide... More
