Visited the Mahagandayon Monastery as part of a taxi tour. Our arrival was timed to see the resident monks queuing up collecting gifts from visitors as well as their rice for lunch. We were able to observe rice & food preparation in the main kitchen...More

You see several hundred monks of all ages walking to lunch. It is nothing special, you see a lot of monks all over the country.

I had tried to avoid this temple at 10:00 am but the driver just dropped me to see a "must see" temple. The parking lot is full of buses and private cars, all shoving their tourists into this temple to see 1.500 monks when lining...More

It was good to see the alms round at 10:30 for hundreds of monks. Very touristy with its pros and cons (it brings awareness of monastic life, yet some tourists are pushy with poor manners). You can bring some food/packages of snacks to contribute; remember...More

Great place of course but western tourists are really driving mad about the pictures: they are pushing each other, taking their cameras to the monks faces and through the windows of the food hall where they having their meal. It all seems like the show...More

Hundreds of monks live at this monastery and they have this procession to lunch that the tourists are allowed to watch and photograph - kind of like a parade. Strange and felt embarrassing to be there. But like a bad accident - you can't help...More

We visited the monastery because our driver insisted it should be part of our circuit but we, like other reviewers here, were horrified by the bad behaviour of other tourists who blocked the pathway and thrust long camera lenses into the faces of the novices...More

I only had a short time in Mandalay, so hired a guide to take me to all the sights. After seeing U Bein Bridge, I was asked if I would like to see the Monastery, I said yes, without realizing I would also witness the...More
