The place is in the middle of nowhere. The road to the top is in a horrible state, however, the trip is worth. The monastery itself is not really impressive, but the views around are simply unforgettable.

While certainly not the largest or nicest of the monasteries in Bulgaria, Glozhene has maybe the most impressive setting. Isolated, situated high up on mountain under sheer cliffs, the drive up to the site is windy and narrow (thankfully, I was there early and met no other vehicles). Stunning views from the monastery, which houses a small church and courtyard. I think there is a small museum there, too, but it wasn't open when I visited; neither was a small cafe. There are also some hiking trails around the monastery, though my schedule didn't permit me to explore them.

Very beautiful place. Definitely recommended to visit on a weekend. The entrance is Free, but you need to pay for parking - 1 leva for a bike and horse (?), 2 leva for a standard car, 3 for mini bus, and so on. Mind that the road there is very steep and narrow. Be prepared to reverse if there's a car coming up. Also, I think the most beautiful view that you can photograph is from the window in the mini museum. Picture attached :)

Going to the monastery is a bit challenging, but the view from the top, the mystical feeling and the great food are totally worthed.

The road to get there is really windy, narrow, and a bit nerve racking, but it's absolutely beautiful with some amazing views. From where you can park, it's an easy walk to the Monestary (although uphill) and once there you can walk around. They have a small eatery and the church has some nice paintings in it. I also was intrigued by the hole for Levski. Overall, I'd say we spent more time trying to get to the monestary than we spent time actually there (we didn't eat there), but I can't say I regret it at all.

It's a bit of a hassle to get there with narrow roads and not much to protect you if you fall off but the pay off is the great view once you have reached your destination. I would strongly recommend to visit this place during the summer as the road is very unpredictable in the winter.

This monastery holds a lot of mystery and even a bit of mystique surrounding why it was established there. The architecture, location and panoramic views in combination with people who stayed here makes it a place I would strongly recommend going too.

This monastery is not suited for people in wheelchairs or those who have difficulties walking as it it has area's with cobblestones and large steps.

The monastery itself is magisterial and imposing - it is definitely worth visiting, especially if you are passing by on the way out of Sophia. Do, however, beware of the narrow mountain road. I am sure that in summer it is safe. We went in December and snow that had fallen a few days before had compacted into ice. We had a 4x4 with snow tires and the drive was fine, but other people were struggling, slipping back down the slopes and sliding all over the place.

The route to the Monastery is so tiny and dangerously sharpened high in the mountains, it is impossible to pass if two big cars meet at the different directions. If I knew I wouldn't go! If you go, beware and take a small car!

Small, but fascinating monastery on the top of the mountain. Brilliant views and rich history, it has it all.

It's a fairly small monastery high up in the mountains, reachable by a long and very narrow road (that starts just outside of the village of Glozhene). As many have said, the views are stunning and it's a very peaceful place. It has played an important role during/right after the years when Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman empire - you can see the hiding place of the most famous Bulgarian revolutionary Vassil Levski, as well as the room that served as the exile quarters of Vassil Drumev - one of the leading figures of the late 1800s, who was a writer, politician and clergy (became mitropolit of Tarnovo). As with most Bulgarian attractions, I wished there was a little more explained and written at those sites about what you are viewing rather than having to guess or google it all ...
