Pinacoteca is a museum of visual arts, with emphasis on Brazilian production since the nineteenth century. It belongs to the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture. It was founded in 1905 by the State Government of São Paulo and it is the oldest art museum in the city. It is installed in the old building of the Arts and Crafts College, designed in the late nineteenth century by the architect Ramos de Azevedo. In the 1990's it underwent an extensive renovation with the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha's project. Pinacoteca hosts about thirty exhibitions and receives about 450,000 visitors yearly. The museum's main focus is to promote to general public a better experience with visual arts with its collection, building and historical relevance.

This is a place like a hidden gem. Very beatiful, organized and with very selected international expositions. Enjoy the guide tours, don't need reserve. It's a mix of paitings and sculptures. Next to the garden, you will find a very good option for lunch. One day a week it's completely free, check with the locals.

This fine arts museum is a landmark of São Paulo. The building alone, outside and inside, is worth visiting (notice the "unfinished" construction marks on inside walls). The permanent collection rotates with shorter exhibitions, with variable level of quality and/or interest. But then, you hit the café, on the ground floor, outside tables facing the Parque da Luz' sculpture garden,... More

The Pinacoteca is a historic building which houses art exhibits on a rotating basis. Whatever is there is bound to be interesting, as is the building itself. It is directly across the street from the Luz metro station and borders Luz Park, which is a small park with native flora.

It is the most well-equipped and innovative museum in the city. The building is very beautiful and pleasant, and hosts thoughtful exhibitions.

Housed in a charming red brick building designed by Ramos de Azevedo in the late 19th century, the Pinacoteca do Estado shows one of the best Brazilian Art collection, comprehending more than 100,000 works mainly by Benedito Calixto, Pedro Alexandrino e José Ferraz de Almeida Junior. The museum has a café overlooking the lovely Luz Park. The Luz subway station... More

We went to Pinacoteca with almost no expectation and ended up loving the museum. Great art collection. My favourites were the ones from the colonial era. So surprising to see the most famous painting from Portinary, Mestiço. We really recommend this museum if you looking for some pieces of art in São Paulo.

I avoid going to Pinacoteca on Saturdays because it is free and too crowded, but the other days are usually fine. Very nice exhibits and wonderful building. I always visit my visit eating something at the Café downstairs. They have good options!

Open spaces, the itinerant collectiona are always great.. Very clean, staff nice and helpful. At the end of the visit there is a cosy coffee shop next to the gardens where you can relax. Don't miss the "pão de queijo" =)
