Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Surrounded by buildings, market stalls, food stalls and entrance/exit to a subway station.

This is a busy part of the Centro. The historical clock was the meeting point for the walking tour.

We noticed that some of the surrounding parts were a little sketchy.

The Columbo bakery is a few minutes walk from here.

We stopped by this place to catch the cable car to Santa Tereza. There's nothing very interesting there. We arrived at the cable car station around midday and there were no more tickets for the whole day. There was a huge queue waiting to catch the tram. We walked to Arcos da lapa and Escadaria Selarón.

Largo da Carioca is a very busy place in the commercial center of Rio, with a subway.
Many people who work in the Center pass through it everyday.
The square is a great meeting point and a good place to go for a walk.
Nearly every day in the week here is a market.
There is also a shopping center.
Tip: here you can buy Copacabana and other T-sirts for only 5 euros.

When I walked across Largo da Carioca with my private tour guide, he told me that it was once a lagoon, where the local Indians used to bathe and the cattle used to drink. These Indians served the Portuguese people by carrying water from the lagoon to their houses. He also told me that there was a fountain in the square by bringing the water from Carioca River through Carioca Aqueduct. I asked him why it’s no longer there, as I thought that it would be very nice to have a fountain in the middle of the square. He said, “It was demolished, because the people were using it for bathing.”
In the square there were several booths of street vendors. As I saw a few people stopping by and checking out the sale items in the booths, I asked him if they were making money. He said: “Yes. They have registered to sell only one item and sell the rest without paying tax.”
It was very busy and noisy in the square, as it is located right in the commercial centre of the city and near Carioca subway station.

Busy area in the heart of Centro with lots of people on their way to the places they have to go to. Great spot for starting a wander around the Centro area.

Carioca is right in the heart of Rio. Above it is the lovely Convent and a nice little craft market sits in the square . It is a fascinating mix of colonial and modern.

Quite busy space as full of office around and where the world Carioca was inventing meaning WhiteMan House literally from Indigenous language for those who like etimology.
Also close to the Bondinho station and other attractions like S.Antonio Church probably the most baroque among Rio's churches which can be accesses by an elevator.
