This is the first hill up on the way to Rio's famous Sugar Loaf. It offers it's own marvelous view from the top (215 meters) but its base is also a good place for hiking.

The trick here is to go for a walk on the Pista Claudio Coutinho, which is left of the Praia Vermelha. It is a short walk, less than 2km. In the first half of it, there is a track going up to the Morro da Urca. It is free and, if you go a little before it closes down (6pm,... More

Nature is great and the view from the middlestation is awesome. We decided not to go further up, cause the clouds covered everything later.

You start walking on a straight path, but suddenly you realize this is not only a path on the woods, it is amazingly beautiful. Nature is there: the trees, different small animals (insects, lizards, small monkeys, colorful birds, butterflies, ants....) and when you look down...the sea on its majesty, its total beauty which enchants us. I love going up there.... More

It is fun to get on the bondinho and up the mountain to get great views of the city from the ocean point of view, but it's also a very hot spot to me at night having drinks with your friends and enjoying the great night skyline of the city. Take your pick, or go up there at sunset and... More

One of the best views of Rio. First mountain before Sugar Loaf. Nice tourist place, panoramic view of the city, cafeterias, ice cream, souvenir shops...nice! It's a must to visit it!

The morro de Urca is a little beach located at the base of the Sugarloaf Mountain. On a sunny day you can go and spend the day there and afterwords go and visit the mountains. The water is calm the sand is nice. Much more intimate then Copacabana or Ipanema Beach. Can get very crowded, plan ahead

Take the cable car on the way up and brave the steep descent in the hope of seeing the wildlife ... snakes and monkeys ... on the way down. Not for the infirm or faint hearted!

If sugarloaf would not exist Moro da Urca would be a great attraction on its own merit. Good views, a very good restaurant, and it is the base for the Helicopter rides in Rio

Staying in Urca

Neighbourhood Profile
Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”
