Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

One of the most important places in downtown Rio. The Cinelandia square holds beautiful buildings such as The National Library, The City Chamber - Pedro Ernesto Palacy; Municipal Theatre; Museum of Fine Arts and the yellow Amadeus Mozart building. And has a subway station just there! It is worth it!!

Surrounded by interesting buildings, only one of which still operates as a cinema.
There seem to be a lot of demonstrations that end here, due to the proximity of the municipal building which saw a lot of money go into politicians' pockets.
Seems to attract homeless people.

Cinelândia Square is a spacious and beautiful public square in the old city center of Rio de Janeiro. Its official name is Praça Floriano Peixoto, in honor of Brazil’s second President, Marshal Floriano Peixoto whose monument was erected in the center of the squire in 1910. Its previous historical name was Ajuda Square because of Ajuda Convent built here in 1750 for women of RDJ. The Convent was later demolished alongwith old colonial houses in 1911 to make way for redesigning of the city. Now this place is the hub of cultural and political activities and some very important and architecturally beautiful buildings adorn the square such as Municipal Theatre (Theatro Municipal), the Brazilian National Library (Biblioteca Nacional), the Rio de Janeiro Municipality (Palácio Pedro Ernesto), the Higher Court (Tribunal Superior), Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts). There are few bars and restaurants in and around the square. There is a statue of Carlos Gomes, an iconic Brazilian composer near Municipal Theatre. In first half of 20th century, there were some very beautiful cinemas around this square which gave the present name to the square i.e. Cinelandia (cinema land). A visit to RDJ without a visit to Cinelandia Square is incomplete for a tourist. The square has a Metro station called ‘Cinelandia’.

A short walk from the Arcos. The Cinelandia is a beautiful building located in a square with other unique buildings...lots of photo opportunities.

This place holds a fundamental historic axis in Rio de Janeiro's urban development and still it's left to die. Not safe to visit on sundays, as the rest of Rio's downtown is.

You must visit cinelandia, there you can see the Municipal Theater, the National Library and the Beaux-Arts Museum. The square hosts most of the political manifestations in the city and is a symbol of freedom of speech for the locals.

We arrived by metro from Ipanema at the Cinelandia Station and walked up into the middle of a large, very pretty square surrounded by a number of architecturally very beautiful buildings.
Turns out that when this square was being remodeled in the early part of the 20th century a number the best cinemas in Rio were built here, hence the name "cinema land". Most though have since closed.
Some of the buildings surrounding the square include the magnificent Municipal Theatre, the Brazilian National Library, the Palacio Pedro Ernesto and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.
In the middle of the square is a large statue and monument to Marshal Floriano Peixoto. the second president of the Republic.

Cinelandia is a must visit place when in Rio! It is full of people not only during the whole working day, but also on the evening. It is fun to sit down and just watch people, but also there are quite few buildings to be seen - Municipal Theatre, Library, Museum of Fine Arts, just to mention the most known ones. All feature beautiful architecture and rich interiors.

This area of Rio is pretty nice! You can walk around Cinelandia and see the National Theater El Teatro Odeon and a variety of cool buildings! The Subway stop is right there and you can walk to Santa Teresa and other Carioca Landmarks. Didn't looked dangerous, but I'll not go late at night or during the weekend!

Neighborhood full of old and great buildings, most of them really well kept: hotels, bars, theathers and so on.
A joyful walk in the heart of a golden age Rio.
Not much foreign tourists comparing to other Rio sites.
Just go!
