Visible from the main highway and from the harbour this little church stands pride of place on the main hillside in this older part of the city. Picturesque on the outside a walk up the stairs or along the zig zag path leads way to the entrance and to the Portuguese ceramic tiled interior. Very different from any church I had been in before and definitely worth the visit. Upon leaving and heading down into the main streets a funicular railway depends to street level and is complimentary.

The church is up on the hill, so you need to walk up some stairs. The path is a bit muddy on the raining day, but not too slippery.

The view from the top is not spectacular as its not that high up, but still worth a climb.

This church, as many others in Rio, is a good exemple of barroc style - outside and inside. Located in a hill, you can get there by the stairs, wich are not hard and by a funicular.

Just a quick walk from the Gloria Station, this is a wonderful little church, forgotten by the mass tourism that rages town. At the end of a regular week day, I was the eleventh person to sign the visit log.
Just on the top of a small hill (outeiro), it seems that you are centuries apart from the buzz of the traffic.
You are in a perfectly preserved colonial square, a couple of ancient house, a peculiar church with doble-octagonal blueprint.
Great view on the Bahia the Guanabara, sun apeak, you get in and find yourself in the fresh shadow, bewtween Portuguese blue tiles walls, and in front of a majestic black carved wood piece of forniture,
You then walk to the church, were the imperial family (and its descendant to-date) officiate their religious cerimonies, in a luminous simply but richly decorated navata.
Must see.

This is another landmark in Rio. When I was going through the neighbourhood of Gloria with my private tour guide in his car, this white church was clearly visible in front of us. It looked quite unique with a single tower with a dome. He told me that this small church was one of the first churches built in Rio and was used to hold services for the royal family. So I quickly snapped a photo through the front windscreen.

Nice little old church on top of a hill overlooking Centro and the Bay of Guanabara. The baroque interior is nice and peaceful and the chuchyard has great views of the bay, the port, and the skycrapers and modern building of Centro (Rio de Janeiro central business area).
From there you can walk downhill for a couple of minutes and see a very original statue of a 'Madonna with a perm (standing on Cupid heads)'

Nice view and location, not very easy to park. One of the oldest churchs in Rio with fine pieces of wood inside. However the outside view is the best thing to look for in this place...

I love this church. It's beautiful from the outside and even more special inside. From the outside you get great views of the city. Brazils kings and queens were baptised here.

This church (not to be confused by the similar named one at Largo do Machado) is a small baroque gem with blue Portuguese tile in the interior which is otherwise rather plain, not gold laden like so many similar type churches in the colonial towns. The overall effect is beautiful. The view from the top over Guanabara bay, Marinha da Gloria, and Aterra do Flamengo is worth a visit, even if the church isn't open. To see the interior try a Sunday morning just around noon when mass is over - or you can go earlier and participate. The Gloria Metro station is pretty close by, so you can walk from there. There is also an elevator. From there you can walk to the MAM (Museum of Modern Art of Rio).

A very nice old church just at the Largo Machado along Rua das Laranjeiras in Rio. The church is a beautiful building sitting at the side of the square. Worth visiting in conjunction with the square.
