The area

Neighbourhood: Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I visited that place last Thursday night and they were performing samba live. You can get a beer can for 6 reales and enjoy the music. I loved the place, it’s small but cozy.

On Fifth Avenue the Bip Bip has the best MAITRE'd on the strip. Always entertaining in between shows of yung mexican acrobats showing their skills - the food is pretty good too

We turned up after a meal for a nice drink. The owner was nothing short of appalling. He was rude and made us feel completely unwelcome even though we had only come for a drink.

He kept pointing at us and in the end we left, what an unfriendly man.

This place is pure Rio spirit. Professionals, semi professional and local musicians and singers get together in the tiniest of bars for Bossa Nova and other latin rhythms. Get drinks from the back of the bar and pay at the end on a tab run by a slightly formidable gentleman. Such an amazing authentic atmosphere but do not expect a seat - standing on the pavement soaking up the atmosphere is fine. Highly recommended for an authentic taste of Rio.

You sit outside on the sidewalk, and serve your own drinks out of the fridges. Bio Bip just celebrated 50 years of activity. It is just a half block off the main drag on Copacabana.

Food - we didn't eat
Cleanliness - 4
Staff - self service
Location - 4
Other positives - this is a unique place to say the least. It's basically a shop and you help yourself to drinks. The guy who owns it is a character, seems annoyed you're there but welcoming at the same time. The locals made us feel very welcome. Definitely go there
Other negatives - none
Value for money/Overall rating - 5

I went all the way to Rio to explore bossa nova. If you are a bossa nova lover, visit there on Wednesday night.

This is a true Brazilian boteco, Local musicians play a mix of samba and bossa nova, the music and atmosphere is amazing but the bar is all about the music, respect the music and the musicians, you don't yell or talk loudly you go here for the music if you want to party get drunk and yell and scream there are plenty of places in rio to do that but its not here. Amazing music and people here one of my best experiences in RIO. Parking along Ipanema beach $2 reals from a council parking man and anywhere from $2-$80+ from a local. Its a small bar looks like a shed from the street and people normally gather on the street outside music is played inside, help yourself to a beer and pay before you leave beer in the fridge and cups on the shelf make yourself at home and enjoy the music. Music starts after 8pm more like 9/10pm.

Go to Bip Bip to hear some great bossa nova, choro and samba. Musicians come and go, and the music continues. The place is minute, but the musicians, playing there are great. Make sure you stay there to hear Alfredinho give a speech about the current state of Brazilian politics or some of the social programs he and the patrons of Bip Bip are running. In December, he feeds almost 700 homeless people on Christmas day. Bip Bip bankrolls the project, but contributions from patrons are welcomed. Some rules: No clapping (not to disturb neighbors) - snap your fingers instead! Standing room only on the footpath. No loud talking while the musicians play. Drinks are self service. You leave your name and pay when you are ready to leave. Trust system works just fine here. Hungry? Go and fry some finger food yourself! Just remember to tell Alfredinho what you had. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!!!

Went to Rio in April 2016 with my entire family. Tried to find Bip Bip one night because my dad and son both play guitar but there was nothing where Bip Bip was meant to be, we were using the GPS on our phones too.
