Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.

As my wife and I strolled through Ipanema, we stumbled upon the Sunday Hippie Fair. It was by happenstance because we didn’t plan that. It was a blessing because my wife loved it. She was interested in purses, blankets, and rugs that vendors were selling. She found a vendor selling blankets and she bought a few of them. She liked them a lot. She also bought a beach bag that said Copacabana on it. We even came back to buy two more blankets because she wanted to give them out as souvenirs. The vendors we worked with only spoke Portugese so there was a bit of a language gap but we paid in cash and it worked out.

I seriously think I built my summer wardrobe here! I got dresses and tops and jewelry and gifts.
There is a metro station right next to it so the location is very easy to find. I was amazed that every other vendor accepts credit cards. As such you can leave your wallet in your hotel and perhaps just carry a few Reals for the metro ride or for the rare vendor who does not accept cards.
Some of them will ship your purchases to you!
There is clothing, jewelry & art (sculptures & paintings). There are even musical instruments for sale. You can get fresh snacks from street vendors but there are also a lot of restaurants and snack bars.

The so-called Hippie Market is every Sunday until 18:00 on the spacious Praca General Osorio which covers an entire easterly block of Ipanema. You can buy souvenirs here, bric-a-brac and -mostly on the inside court-, painted art. A lot of touristy stuff with pictures of the Cristo and the Pao (some not bad) but also some higher quality artwork. Notably paintings of people of various ethnicities of Brazil. Definitely worth a visit on the Sunday, perhaps followed by a beer in one of the neighbourhood bars.

Before arriving in Rio, my wife and I already knew about the Sunday hippie market in Ipanema's Praça General Osorio . So when Sunday morning came along we made a point to visit the market before lunch and spend some time browsing around. There are literally hundreds of vendors hawking all kinds of wares and trinkets out of makeshift stalls, from leather goods to handicrafts and costume jewelry. There are some food stalls as well. We spent about an hour going around the square and ended up buying several items, some for ourselves and some to bring back as gifts for our friends and relatives. Prices are generally reasonable and some haggling is possible.
However, not all vendors are completely honest and some are seasoned experts at ripping people off. In our case, we bought a nice hand-carved stone figure of Christ the Redeemer, for about 100 reais, from a blonde lady on the southern end of the square, who all she sells is these figurines (in different sizes and made of different materials). While we were paying her, she had her younger assistant move to the back of the stall, away from eyesight, to dutifully wrap up the item. Little did we know, we were falling for the old pig-in-a-poke scam. Only after arriving home a week later and unwrapping the thing, did we find out it had been switched for a really kitschy piece of crap made out of molded plastic (and probably not even worth five bucks) but painted to look like the nice carved stone one we had picked.
In conclusion, Ipanema's hippie market may be worth a visit if you have some spare time on a Sunday in Rio. You may find a lot of interesting things, but be on your toes if you decide to buy anything from the vendors there.

Went to the hippie fair in December 2005. We found mostly what you'd expect : medium to low-quality merchandise aimed at tourists. On the positive side, prices were very reasonable, and all mechants were willing to give you a bargain. We bought many souvenirs for friends and family, and fairly-priced art pieces for ourselves. When bargaining, always offer less than you are willing to pay, usually about 2/3 of the asking price : if it's 50 R$, offer 35 and bargain your way up from that. You'll usually get at least 15% off the original price, more if you buy multiple items from the same vendor. Have fun, smile alot, chat with the vendors (most speak a little English, or will at least pretend!), and travel 'light' (no expensive items : leave cameras, etc at home, as guide books will tell you). We felt safe the whole time we were there. Great day.

You can get most of the stuff available here in a few other street fairs by the city (for the same price), that is true. But Ipanema´s Hippie Fair is tradition, culture and, indeed, a lively and true "carioca" market. So, that is not just a question of shopping, but also, a question of atmosphere.
You can get your souvenirs everywhere else, but wait for Sunday for this Hippie Fair, a must in Rio.

The fair is exactly what its name says: Hippie Fair. You will find various tables selling hippie items like t-shirts, jewelry, sandals, and paintings. I lived in Rio for 4 months, and we came here if we had free time on Sundays. There some really cool items (I bought a blow-dart gun that was carved by indigenous tribes for $15 reais).
If you are relaxing at Ipanema Beach, stop by the Hippie Fair on your way home and check out what they got.

This is one of the worthwhile things to do if you're in the vicinity of the main Rio beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Sao Conrado) or Lagoa and want to purchase some local items. Some reviews stated that this fair is open weekends, but that is inaccurate, it is only open on Sundays. The website says 07:00 to 19:00 (7AM to 7PM) but that too is inaccurate. I've seen stands start to pack up at 3 or 4 in the afternoon and by 5 things are winding down rapidly. I suspect that, like other fairs in Rio, the 7 AM time is a bit optimistic and you will have a better selection around until 9 AM or so.
This is a fun place to shop outdoors with lots of crafts, T-Shirts, clothes, bikinis, sandals, art, paintings and Rio souvenirs. Don't just pay what they ask, shop around and barter. I've seen stands selling the same item at up to twice the price, so don't buy at the first stand you see an item that you like. Take your time, wander around and see what's there and how the prices match up. There's nothing like shaking your head no and saying, "too expensive" and starting to slowly walk away to help tilt things more in your favor. When you return later with the knowledge of the prices asked at other stands and make a lower offer, you may get your price, especially if you buy more than one item from a single stand. Just keep it light and friendly, don't get hot-headed or belligerent. Most Brazilians are pretty friendly and will respond well to some friendly negotiations.
There is a stand which sells foods typical of Bahia State with the women dressed in typical "Baiana" clothing, located along Rua Prudente de Morais. It is worth trying the "Acarajé" (shrimp, onions, okra and sauce served over fried dough), the Pudim de Tapioca (tapioca pudding) or any of the wonderful "Baiana" foods.

Parking: On Sundays the road along Leblon and Ipanema is only one way toward Copacabana with the lanes on the beach side of the median closed for pedestrians from Leblon to Aproador. Look for parking spots on your right along the raised median. If you cannot find anything there, try working your way over to Rua Visc. de Pirajá and then turn right onto Rua Jangadeiros, circling the plaza. Keep your eye open for men with raised arms offering to guide you to available parking spots. If you use their service it is customary to tip them. I do not give more than 5 Reais although the frequently ask for more.
As always, in any crowded public place, keep your money/wallet/purse/cell phone secure and beware of pickpockets. Don't pull out a wad of cash, keep denominations in separate pockets or organized so you can pull out only what you need for a purchase. I've never had a problem, but don't get careless or your experience could turn sour in just a few moments.

This market is placed on the square near the Ipanema beach and is open only during Sundays. This is one of the best places to buy your souvenirs from Rio for really really good prices (I was a little bit surprised that the prices in vendors that I visited were fixed - no bargaining). You can buy hear magnets, paintings, food, pencils, clothing, handbags... This is not flea market!!

So many different vendors, I wish I had more Reis! Lots of great leather products, I purchased cute wallet/pouch that was sewed and artfully decorated. Also, lots of Brazilian painters to choose from ( willing to negotiate price). Make sure you bring Reis and some will not take credit cards. Much cheaper than hotel stores and expensive malls.

Qual a distância da feira a praia de Ipanema? É seguro fazer o trajeto a pé?

Ipanema é um bairro muito seguro, principalmente durante o dia, a Feira Hippie acontece somente nos domingos pela manhã à tarde, portanto vá tranquilo. Para ir à praia de Ipenema são só duas quadras, cerca de duzentos metros no total.
