This neighborhood is not yet known by many tourists and its visitors are mainly locals going for a stroll on the long stretch of this white sandy beach. We always stay by Posto 10 where my cousin resides. Many bring their dogs, some play beach volleyball. There is a long bike lane by the beach which can get pretty jammed on the weekends. If you arrive very early in the morning, it will be filled by surfers. It is also well guarded by lifeguards. If the waves are too high and unsafe to swim, you will see red flags warning beach goers of the condition of the beach. You will also find plenty of beach chairs and beach umbrellas for rental. The beach is also filled with vendors selling food and artifacts. I would be skeptical to by food or beverages that are not prepackaged by a known manufacturer. I do recommend drinking coconut water straight from the source. Vendors are pretty skilled when it comes to cracking the top of the coconut and inserting a straw.
What I like most about this neighborhood is that it is filled with Kiosks selling food and drinks. They all have a table with an umbrella and chairs and its atmosphere are beach casual. You can enjoy your beer or your Caipirinha ( brazilian cocktail ) overlooking the ocean.
I recommend visiting Rio between May and September. The temperature will be mild, there will be plenty of sunshine, and the beach will be less crowded.
I would be very careful when visiting Rio in general. Be mindful of your belongings, do not leave items unattended and avoid wearing expensive items. Most important, if you can avoid looking like a tourist, please do so.

A nice beach with big waves. We felt safe spending a whole evening at one of the little bars at the beach. Good option if you want to get away from Zona Sul for a while. Recreio is much calmer and fewer tourists.

I'm Brazilian and lived in Recreio most of my life but I am writing this review in English to inform our friends from other countries about the rather unknown Recreio's beach. Being located quite far away from the center, the beach is most of the times "empty" when compared to Ipanema or Copacabana, especially during the week it is possible to enjoy your coconut water in peace. Recreio is a lovely neighbourhood considered as safe in comparison to other places near the center. Near the beach there is for example the Park Chico Mendes where you can get in touch with the nature and animals. Please visit Recreio and you won't regret it! :)

A bus away from main rio. Beautiful beach with a really gradual slop into sea which means you can go far out before your fully under water. Compared to the tourist traps the food is more legit and more locals around. Try walking up the rock for great views. Also the ocean is so much cleaner here than ipanema etc.

The beach is not crowded as in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon - good surfing waves. I learnt to surf here and was able to ride the waves on Day One. Very local feel and great view. Safe to walk around on my own to other beaches nearby. Prainha beach is a 30mins walk, secluded, beautiful, surrounded by Nature Park.

one of the best beaches in Rio if you like big waves. Be very careful because even though you are close to the coast it can be difficult to get out.

I loved this beach and at a walking or cycling distance the beaches near by also. The cycle route is great, not awfully packed even at the weekend - I went cycling all the way to praia da macumba and praia da reserva. you can rent a bike at the blue tree design hotel and take this opportunity to visit it. The architeture and clean all white decoration are worth a visit.

Miles long sandy beach with many hotels and high-rise apartment buildings, tends to be cleaner than most, and fairly empty, except on summer weekends. The many kiosks offer food and drink, plus beach gear for rent.

This beach is a little gem. You wont see any skyscapers and not many tourists as well. Its more a getaway for Rio locals or people living in a close town. Great for surfing.
