Chilled-out, secluded beach spot. The only drawback is that cell phone reception is very bad so it's hard to get an Uber when it's time to leave. The restaurant near the entrance will let you use their internet though.

What an amazing city! My coworker and I (2 female retired teachers from Kentucky) cashed in our airline award points and headed for a little R&R in Rio! We read all the travel guides and forums that warned against everything, but we went anyway, and we're SO glad that we did. We got our money exchanged at the Atlanta airport (with no extra charge incurred), we had prebooked and paid for our airport transportation, our hotels, and our tours. So basically when we arrived, we were ready for Rio!! At every establishment that we visited, there was always someone who spoke English. Everyone that we met was charming and more than willing to make our trip memorable. We took the same precautions that we would take in any large city in the USA and we never met with any problems, nor did we ever feel in any way threatened. Rio is a beautiful, welcoming city and if you're ever presented with the opportunity, I would recommend that you GO!!!

This was a beautiful beach tucked away behind mountains. It's a great location to escape the city but beware of rush hour traffic on your way home. It's horrendous!

This beach is stunning with clear water and interesting rock formations. There is a good restaurant at the very end of the beach. We drove all the way to the end and parked near the restaurant. The beach was less crowded here than towards the entrance, and we found it to be sublime. But the traffic is really awful on weekends along the coastal road if you are coming from the north (e.g., Copacabana or Ipanema). So leave plenty early to avoid the traffic. I would go back to this beach and recommend it to others.

It is great to drive from rio, past barra and then go to Grumari. It is a beautiful coastal route. There are a lot of places to stop. Take pictures. Go for a swim. Enjoy. You can spend a whole day doing this. Grumari beach is very beautiful. Watch out for the staff at the parking place. They sometimes charge you too much. Just ask the staff of the beach bar for the regular price.

This is one of my favorite places to visit just outside the usual Rio hotspots: Grumari and Praia do Abrico! Best to rent a car (be sure to ask for automatic transmission, 90% rentals are stick shifts!), as taking bus out here would make a long day. But: wow, what a fantastic beach... Black Bar & Restaurant there has good seafood and drinkgs, too!

Completely unspoiled natural beach with no buildings, makes you easily imagine how this part of the world was 500 years ago. Just don't go during a hot summer weekend day because it will be overloaded with people and cars.

For me, the best beach in the city... quiet and crystal clear water"! And another important detail: there are no street vendors.

Grumari, Prainha and Abrico beaches are amazing, its 15 min drive from Barra Da Tijuca. No public transportation, must go by car.

it's been a long time since grumari was a wild, out of hand place where you could enjoy nature. now it's more like 2 hours to get there, beach packed with people and two more hours to get back. try the remote beaches in pedra de guaratiba instead.
