Neighbourhood: Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”

Most of the pictures and reviews are about Praia Vermelha, the small beach at the bottom of sugarloaf mountain, just a few steps from the cable car station. Praia Urca is the other side of Morro Urca and is used mainly for water sports, it is not safe to swim there because of water pollution. Praia Vermelha, the beach in most of the pics is lovely to swim in and my favourite beach in Rio but it is mainly locals who go there.

Praia da Urca, only a few steps away from cable car station, is one of those peaceful places in Rio, to recreate and calm down a bit from the hustle and bustle of and otherwise wonderful city. Whenever we visit Pão de Açúcar (preferrably early morning or late afternoon for smoother light), we try to reserve at least half an hour for sunset at Praia da Urca.
Despite we don't mind the noises of a big city (it is part of the experience we love in Rio), we enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at Praia da Urca.

Just a small beach, so different from all the other famous beaches but very cool to spent some time here. Beachgoers are mainly locals... very chill place.

Wonderful view and sunset!! Great place to walk from the begining of Urca until the end of "Forte São João". It is the safest place in Rio de Janeiro.
But the beach is not very clean and during weekends plenty of people not very clean as well. I recommend go to there on week days. During weekends you can go just for walk around and to see the wonderful sunset, drinking a beer and eating a snack from the "Mureta do Bar Urca". Great place for family ou friends or for a date.

Great as not too big, with children, and clean. Take your time, you do not need to keep watching around as URCA is very safe and this beach is a great place

We spent the morning at a small inlet beach in Urca. While not the usual sprawling white sand coastline that people expect from Rio. This was a small inlet beach, that was clean, cozy and not crowded. Very children friendly and worth the visit! The mountains have cable car rides in between them. Didn’t try them yet, but I bet the view is awesome.

It's a small beach in a nice neighborhood. I feel like many places in Rio de Janeiro has amazing views, and this beach is one of them.

I was born in Rio, but going to Urca's beaches was always like holidays abroad!
There were a few to chose, the protected little one when I was a kid and the big one as me and my cousins turn teenagers. Surfing and body boarding as a must!
