For those who read the reviews in this space, they may seem quite strange, as they vary a lot. I'll explain why this has to do with the expectations of the visitors. There is one who appreciates simple things from the interior, especially from the northeast of Brazil, and I affirm that this one will love the experience. On the other hand, there is the visitor who expects something sophisticated that is not the proposal of this cultural space. This visitor will ⁇ dislike everything. I estimate that I have visited this fair at least 10 times and in all of them I liked everything! The recurring complaint of some is the intense noise of musical bands, but just do not go to the place late in the afternoon or at night. As for restaurants, there are all categories and prices. In fact, some invite the visitor to eat there and are never unelegant, and that doesn’t bother me a little. There are foods that are hardly found in RJ at this fair, such as paraibano-foot-moleque (nothing to do with the miner), caruru, tacaca, manicoba, caju cooked in the pan, goat buchada, cheese-butter (which I find wonderful), among other items difficult to find in RJ. The only place I found tucunaré and tambaqui for sale in RJ was there! Some crafts are quite attractive like the ones made of goat leather. There is a store that sells medicinal herbs brought from the interior of Paraiba, but few people notice this, because they go through the place. Many complain about the hygiene conditions of the fair, but this fact has to do with visitors on busy days. In general, bathrooms are well cleaned on days and hours of less movement. I don't think it's a place for children to visit, but I don't think they dislike this visit. For them, I suggest a visit to the Carioca Zoo which is near the San Cristovo Fair - about 15 minutes walk.

So... This was an interesting place to visit.
By NO means is this a touristy spot. Which is great for ones pockets when looking to buy souvenirs and experience life as a Carioca and not a tourist.
Based on a recommendation from TripAdvisor, my friends and I caught the metro here. We got off at Sao Cristovao metro stop and from there caught a taxi that averaged about R$18. Do not venture out in this place alone or with anything that would signify you are a tourist. It is a very seedy area and far from anything touristy (there is a beauty to find in anything that locals do).
With less than R$100 we brought souvenirs for about 12 people including, spices, hand made vases, t-shirts, hats, key chains, cachaca, haivianas, ash trays, and so many other small things.
On the outer parts of the fair is all foods and music (good food by the way, all grilled), and in the inner area are all the shops.
We ventured here for about 2 hours and got cultured and spent only a fraction on food and souvenirs than you would anywhere else in Rio.
We caught a cab on the way back to the metro and saw a couple of transvestites adjusting their "junk" out in the open (I mean... Just out for everyone to see), I'm assuming, waiting to get picked up.
Do not go here and expect luxury, cleanliness or safety. Though we did not have any issues, our luck isn't everyone else's.
If you like an adventure - just go with an open mind and enjoy!

Sao Christovão is a great market. Still authentic, still local and still loads of fun. I would recommend thursdays, friday or saturdays. Come late afternoon and browse around and enjoy the smells, the people and the various cultural happenings in the market. Before dinner, go to the cachaça (rum) store and sample a few free shots. Then eat and throw yourselves upon the dancefloor. Two stages play free live music all night long. And by the way - it's all about Northeastern Brazlian traditions and music. The only place in Rio like this.

The northeastern culture fair, held at São Cristóvão, is a brilliantly assembled mess, where you will be able to dance, drink, laugh, sing and, most importantly, eat the very best form the Northeast of Brazil.
The whole area is oval, with many different paths to follow inside. For overall orientation, it is possible to think of it as having 4 corners. In two of them, there are the entrances to the fair. In the other two, there are big stages, where high-quality bands present themselves.
There you will find many different restaurants, with a big veriety of prices. The ability to negotiate a good price will be fundamental here. Different waiters will start conversations with you through your walk, and a good price can always be previously arranged.
For the singers, there are also many different karaoke bars. It is great to have a party with a group of friends, and sort of take one of these over. Here, survey the price/quality of the equipment, just as well.
There are also smaller stages where good forró most likely will be playing throughout the night. Usually, many people will be dancing, and sometimes it can get really packed.
As a final tip: try all the food you can. The food from the northeast might not be the healthiest, but it definitely tastes best. "Baião de Dois", "Tapioca", "Açaí", the sodas called "Jesus" and "cajuína", and "Queijo Coalho" are my recommendations.

For those longing to try typical NE Brasilian food, hear NE Brasilian music, or just plain find a lower cost alternative to the Ipanema Hippie Fair, this is a great place to look. With stages at each end, and room for dancing, the entertainment alone is worth the visit. Numerous restaurants priced reasonably. A few years back, a R$1 fee for entry was imposed, to keep the annoying street kids out. That fee has since increased, but is still very reasonable for the entertainment in the afternoons and evenings. Verify the hours before you go, generally it is open from Thursday evenings to Monday, 24 hours. Merchants sleep on the floors of their shops, so many shops have no specific opening hours. I would avoid early mornings (before noon) as few shops are open. It truly comes alive after dark and into the late night hours.

Feira de São Crsitóvão, or Feira dos Nordestinos is that kind of attraction that every Rio visitor must visit !
The São Cristóvão Fair has lots of original folklore stuff, music, food and locals, most of them with any kind of northeast origin.
It´s the best location to buy northest souvenirs, times cheaper than Copacabana or Ipanema. There is a good variety of cachaças as well.
There are many traditional restaurants, where one can try an original brazilian meal at reasonable prices. Good choices are picanha, carne de sol, carne seca, feijão verde, and others.
Don´t leave the fair before you taste a tapioca !!! It is some R$ 4,00 with a variety of flavors. We recommend the tapioca de queijo coalho (regional cheese stuffing). The kiosks near the main entrance are a good option.
The Fair has two large Forró stages, where Forró bands play during the weekend. Forró is a very lively music and even if you don´t like to dance, you´ll enjoy watching brazilians performing...
The Fair runs everyday apart from Mondays. The best choice is to visit it during the weekend. It doesn´t close (yes, even late at night !) from Friday 10h to Sunday 20h.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday opens at 10h and closes at 18h.
There´s a R$ 7,00 parking lot just in front of the main entrance and a taxi from Copacabana to São Cristóvão must cost around R$ 25,00.
The entrance fee ? Ridiculous R$ 3,00 !!!
A hint: you may combine it to a visit to the Maracanã Stadium ! One idea is visiting Maracanã during the afternoon, and the Faire afterwards. You can have the dinner and watch the Forró bands playing.
A must !!!

This is an interesting fair, lively and informal without luxury or refinement, whose theme is the culture, folklore and customs of the northeast region of Brazil. Founded by immigrants from this region (one of the poorest in the country), moving to Rio in search of better opportunities, the location is great for fun with typical dances and to learn more about this suffering but happy people. The regional food is something unbelievable: excellent and cheap!

Sounded like a really good place to go and get authentic souvenirs. Quite a long way out from central Rio. Quite frankly a lot of "tat" with a few reasonable shops/stalls - prices weer cheap though. Worst part was the pressure selling to get you into a restaurant, of which there were loads! Food was good and well priced but could do without the "suk market" mentality of trying to grab you off the street. Overall would not go back.

Forró, mocotó e cordel. An amazing source of Northeastern culture in Rio. You can get anything from musical instruments to rapadura to cordel literature, and dance the night away.

Be careful outside as lots of unwanted attention . When you get through the security gate and pay it’s a lot safer. Lots of local produce . Not really stuff that I was interested in as it’s a bit cheap and tacky ( but went because people said it was good for crafts . If you count wooden male and female genitalia as bottle openers as a craft then this is the place for you .
Love music being played and locals dancing good vibe . But a place for a couple beers and a quick dance , not a place you would want to get squiffy .
