This beautiful church dominates the city, with a tall spire, and was inspired by the great French churches and cathedrals. The building was started in 1884 and opened in 1925. Inside there is a pipe organ, and some delightful stained glass. The building feels quite light and airy. The cathedral is dedicated to Sao Pedro de Alcantara.

Really nice church that is well maintained. Ambient choral music is pumped through as you walk about the inside. Contains the tombs of Dom Pedro II and his wife. Free.

This is the resting place of Brazil's last Emperor, Dom Pedro II and his family. It is a beautiful church completed only in the 1920s. A must visit when in Petropolis.

This is a beautiful and historic church. The Imperial Chapel there is the burial site of many Portuguese royal family members, including Dom Pedro II. Stop for 15-20 minutes and get dome nice photos.

The beautiful Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara dominates centro Petropolis. The cornerstone was laid by Dom Pedro II in 1884 but the building wasn't completed until 1925. French Gothic style church with beautiful stained glass windows and Carrera marble. Large pipe organ. The Imperial Chapel is the burial site of Dom Pedro II and other royal family members. Dom Pedro II is the only Portuguese King born outside Portugal and he wanted to be buried in his native Brazil. No photos allowed inside.

While the church is not extensively decorated, the stained glass is beautiful, and it is interesting to see the tombs of the royal family.

The cathedral has an amazing architecture and the interior is equally beautiful and peaceful. There is a story of love for the country in the tombs of the emperor and part of his family.
Unfortunately, the outside statues and walls are deteriorating by lack of care and investment on urgent restoration. It is a shame that a very rich lady (the billionaire L. Safra, a Brazilian) felt more prone to donate a very large amount of money to restore Notre Dame but could not consider a few thousands for places like this, in her own country.

I was very impressed with the simplicity of the cathedral, but truly amazed at the elaborate stain glass windows.
