My husband loves forts and so I hired a guide to take us to Niterol. The fort is okay but the tour is only in Portuguese so if you don’t bring a guide, you’re out of luck. It was okay. The views of Rio are exceptional If you’re in Niterol, I would suggest going.

You will not find many historic sites in Brazil that are as old and in such a good state of conservation. The views of the entrance of the bay and the Sugar Loaf are stunning, and the facilities are good. You can take a guided tour, which will make you experience a lot more interesting, but just strolling in the area is very enjoyable.

This is a great vantage point to see both ways along the beaches. It was a short walk from our hotel on Copacabana.

This vantage point is perfect spot for viewing Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer. The drive is beautiful, passing by Adam and Eve beach and other pretty little beaches

This is an historical tour.
This fortress is set at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, and joining Copacabana fortress at the other side was responsible to protect principally the city of Rio de Janeiro.
During the dictatorship of the 60's and on it was tre prison for the "communists".
Many of them died here.
The ammunition magazine is a very beautiful place, and its contruction on a form of an arch is fantastic.
Each stone was brought from Portugal, with numbers, and then put back toghether here.
I recomend this tour to anyone that comes to Niterói.

The tours are conducted by guards/soldiers and ours had interesting stories to share about the history of the fort. Can be challenging to understand if you don't speak Portugese. Beautiful views of Rio and the drive there is fun with plenty to see although the roads are narrow in places.

This is a 'must see' for a fortification enthusiast. Excellent location for securing Guanabara bay and Rio de Janeiro. Very well maintained although some of the guns are rusting and could use restoration. Fabulous views over the channel especially at sunset.

Great view of Rio. Sometimes very narrow roads to get there. Tell guard you are going to see the view, when asked to stop at entry. No problem.

The fort is quite interesting but it can be visited only in a guided tour that cost money, comes at scheduled times (approximately once every hour) and it is only in Portuguese! Therefore is not suitable for those who do not speak this language. Try just to walk and view the fort and the pleasant park located just outside of the fortress walls and there is no charge to park and enjoy the scenery. There are excellent views Rio. The drive across the route 101 causeway to the fortress passes through the city of Niteroi with a very attractive route along the harbor.
