We found most of Belem to be noisy, busy and very dirty. This small pocket of the city around the Metropolitan Cathedral and the fort is an oasis of calm and tidiness. Definitely worth visiting. We walked here from the Ver-o-Peso market.

Cidade velha is a great place to visit. Just don't go at night or wearing jewelry, it is a shady part of town, but highly recommend you go and sit by the river sipping coconut water.
