Beautiful, intimate church, very different from all the other gold laden Baroque Revival churches in Ouro Preto. The frescoed ceiling is exquisite!
Entrance fee, as in every church in toxn. No photography is allowed but it is not strictly enforced, as Brazilian tourists have the habit of posing in front of the altar and taking selfies!!!.
Restricted visiting hours.

Nice Baroque church with impressive ceiling paintings and altarpiece. 10 reais to enter, but it includes the small but interesting museum dedicated to the famed leper sculptor Aleijadinho. Some of his works are there as well.

the style differs from the heavy gold ornated churches we visited before and it was a breath of fresh air

It was designed and built in the second half of 18th century by Antonio Francisco Lisboa, also know as Aleijadinh", with wonderful paintings of Costa Ataíde. Probably the master piece of these 2 Brazilian artists. Paintings on the walls near the altar are amazing. Definitely the most ineteresting church in Ouro Preto. We could admire later on, during our trip other great achievements of Aleijadinho at the end of his life, in Congonhas in particular.

Google maps indicates the museum of Aleijadinho in another church, which is now being renovated. The museum is in fact at the back of this church, and it is worth seeing, especially the painted ceiling of the hall. Other parts of the church also have nice paintings and other decorations.

This church is quite historical and possesses some interesting artifacts in the treasury section (chalices and the like), but what we most enjoyed was the delightful view of the surrounding hills. So you should definitely make it a point to stop by!

Considered the masterpiece of Aleijadinho, the site had to be our first historic site in town. It was all as promised and more and our introduction to his work. Unfortunately and understandably, no photography is permitted. The ceiling paintings by Ataide are memorable for their difference from other church ceilings. We took our time to tour the entire facility including the side and back rooms with other artifacts Cost to enter was R$10 per person.

Highly recommended.

There are two places, where the best work of the two most important artists of Brazil's 'Baroco mineiro' can be seen: the Santuario de Bom Jesus in Congonhas and the church of São Francisco de Assis in Ouro Preto.

Antonio Francisco Lisboa, usually known as 'Aleijadinho', worked mainly as a sculptor, while Manoel da Costa Ataíde, better known as 'Mestre Ataíde', had painting as his main art. Aleijadinho was also the architect of this church, located in the upper part of Ouro Preto.

Probably Aleijadinho's masterpiece on this church is the soapstone relief in a medallion in the upper part of the front, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. Mestre Ataíde again, who favoured bright colours, gave all his talent to the paintings in the churches ceiling, especially to his 'Assunçao da Virgem'.

There is an admission fee of R$ 10 to visit this church.
