The gold mines are what made the region important some years before. Chico Rei mine shows perfectly what was the technology those days and how people worked underground. It also explains the specifics of 'black' gold. Small museum outside presents some tools and machines used in the past. Worth seeing, as it's a bit different than other mines all around... More

We enjoyed the ride into and out of the mine. Our guide did not speak English, but we are working on our Portuguese and she was very nice and helped us understand what she was saying. The museum back outside needs some more signage.

Compared to other attractions quite expensive. Starts with a trip down on a cart. Show round through the mines. Interesting history. Guide did not speak english.

Visited this now disused mine on my trip to Ouro Preto. Very welcoming team be prepared to relive the experience of miners many of whom were brought in as slaves from Africa. They have a very nice shop selling an array of semi-precious stones and jewelry.

the atmosphere at Ouro Preto is infectious. the cobbled streets and quaint restaurants interspersed with the gorgeous churches and exquisite shops is very interesting. Shops have genuine stuff and prices are better than airports and cities.

Very interesting historical sight. The "tram" ride down into the mine shaft is an experiance in itself. The "up" ride was equally thrilling. We had a guide for the underground tour and that was very helpful. The groundside museum is interesting but not really too much to peruse.

While staying in Belo Horizonte we took a trip to Ouro Petro. We hired a driver who also spoke both English and Portuguese and off we went. It was a 2 hour drive into the mountains with many photo ops along the way. We toured a slave church, a church full of millions of dollars of gold, museums, gem shops,... More

The highlight is the descent into the mine on a carriage driven down by gravity and raised by compressed air (steam originally, I guess). There is not much to see down there, but the guide is entertaining (as long as you have an interpreter!) The inevitable gift shop is quite good and has some reasonably priced minerals.

A great place to go if it is not raining. An underground inactivate mine that in the past yielded 25 tons of gold and was owned by an slave Chico Rei. One can walk through some galleries with a guide.

I learned a lot about Brazilian and European History in Ouro Preto and visiting the mines was very enriching. It was very special and at times fun like when we took the troll down and when the super smart guide made so many jokes and explained the origin of many Brazilian expressions we say nowadays. The guide we had was... More
