The MM Gerdau - Museu das Minas e do Metal , part of the "Liberty Square Cultural Circuit", was designed to highlight the remarkable relations between the history and the cultural expressions of the State of Minas Gerais, with the wealth of its mines and natural resources, and even to celebrate the identity of the State and its people. The Museum presents a process that translates the formation and the development of a region, revealing two of the main economic activity of Minas Gerais: mining and metallurgy.

The building is amazing. An old and importante building back form the time the public institutions were to be set in buildings to impress, this museum unites modern tecnologies in a conservative building to mix past and future of the city of Belo Horizonte and tells a litle bit of the State of Minas Gerais. It´s not a tiresome museum,... More

One of the best museums I have been to in Brazil. It is really well maintained and the staff is helpful and always proactive. As it is in a central park, it is really easy to get to by public and/or private transportation. The information is clear and the collection is abundant. Highly recommended.

Very interesting and organized museum. If you're into rocks, stones etc you're gonna love it! The building itself has a very beautiful preserved outside and a very modern inside. Liked the holistic approach they use to explain why minerals and metals are important and part of our lives. Not only from the health and chemical spectrum but also the historic... More

Leave yourself at least two hours to enjoy the museum. The building itself is stunning with old colonial architecture, high ceilings, wooden doors and stained glass. The stones are exceptional and presented in diverse ways - including holograms!

Very interesting for all ages and an excellent, interactive, educative museum. You don't have to be a geologist to appreciate the exhibitions and apart from precious stones, you see what part some minerals play in our daily life.

Mines gerais is I think the centre of mining for metals in Brazil. The museum gives a very good view of its history and continuing extraction of ores etc. only downside not much English translation so need to understand Portuguese or go with a Brazilian!

This is the perfect museum for a state called "General Mines". At this modern museum you can find hundreds of different minerals, stones, blocks and even meteorites. They have an interactive periodic table and a scale that can even say your body minerals composition.

From reading the museum’s website description I expected a quasi boring technical display focus on the history of mining and metallurgy of Minas Gerias. But, oh my! When visiting it, I found it fun, educative, playful, revealing, interactive, and moving. It cleverly combines geology, mineralogy and history of the local and state community with respect for the environment, while providing... More

Minas is by definition a mining state, so this museum is very appropriate. The exhibits are interesting for all ages--I took my 6 yr. old grandson, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Need to go back alone to dig deeper.

We went to this museum as Americans with locals. Everything had subscripts in English and the guides also offered assistance in English. I loved all the interactive exhibits related yo minerals and the many many samples. Wish I could have seen this place years ago when I was taking inorganic chemistry.
