Be careful: most of the museum only opens in the afternoon (from 1pm). When i went, only one part was open, and it was good. Mostly contemporary artists (lots of photos). The rest was closed. There is also a café and a art cinema. The location is great, in old buildings on the seashore.

This place is a must see in a visit to Salvador. The best sunset of the town, specially at saturdays, when there's a jazz jam session there. It is a museum, so you can visit the exibitions earlier, sit at the balcony and enjoy the view.

I've been there with friends from Germany and China and we were all impressed by this site - so impressed that we've been there twice! The sunset there is wonderful, relaxing on the deck having very well made Caipirinhas. The buildings are lovely and the restauration made by Lina Bo Bardi (same architect who projected the MASP Museum in São Paulo) made it even more interesting, a very good mix of preserved historic buildings and modern architecture. Great place for relaxing from Pelourinho's buzz, take a taxi there and forget about any concerns you might have. Definetaly a must in Salvador.

The museum itself is small. We tried different days to visit and each day some part of it was closed, even if google said otherwise.
I bought a book at its store but when I decided to open it was all glued due to humidity. Next day I came back to changed in the morning. It was closed. But the lady from the store was very nice and gave me back my money.
Very sunset by it side though.

The museum was open the Wednesday evening about 4:30 when we stopped in. There was little inside to recommend it. But it was a peaceful place to sit outside as the sun was setting. It was a very nice modern building surrounded by a beautiful fence, overlooking the bay. But below was a wonderful restaurant and folks have mentioned the staircase... something that was in the "old museum" down the cliff to the left of the current museum. The restaurant below I can not find. I have the name written as Solar Contera... but nothing like that appears for me on the web or on this site. It is very old and rustic with uneven stone floors and brick walls. The food was very good at a moderate price. But best of all, visiting here at this time of evening is wonderful for the sunset. Even watching the lights come on in the favela next door was lovely. Then to go in for a lovely dinner was the perfect ending to our day.

I fail to grasp why public administrators enjoy opening museums if they know they are not to give much attention and if they don't really care about visitors!
This is a case in point. About 10 years ago it was booming and they created a sculpture park, really a great idea with a great view,
Now, everything is poorly planned, the park is most of the time closed, the collection is barely visit, service is weak, and jazz program - a plus and incentive to visit the small but good expo -- has just been deactivated. Yet, they are talking about new museums.
I like the collection and you would. The question is when to visit it!! Sorry, but they miss good management.

The Solar do Unhão (MAM) is a wonderful mansion with a chapel beside. Facing the Baía de Todos os Santos with its gorgeous view. But as a museum is a shame with nothing inside. The only thing that worth a visit is the wonderful staircase, a piece of wood, beautifully crafted in the middle of the main lobby.
The MAM's cafe is the place where at saturdays they play jazz music at sunset.

Hello everybody, I am a local guy from Salvador and I would like to give you some info about visiting MAM - Museum of Modern Art.
It's an amazing spot, one of my favourites in town. Besides the museum, which always has some art exhibition (check it out if you're interested in arts), the place has also a little restaurant-cafe with a great view of the bay (Baía de Todos os Santos). But, the best part of this incredible spot is the area going down to the right of the chapel. You must go there and see the sunset, which has a beautiful view of the bay and of the Gamboa, a beautiful and colourful favela right beside MAM. The scenario is awesome.
If you're in town for the weekend, you might want to check the MAM sunset on Saturday, as every Saturday there is a little jazz band playing after the sunset (R$7 the ticket), the music is great and so is the crowd. It starts 18:30 or something. So just go there, watch he sunset and wait for the jazz, it will be great! There are drinks and food stalls available on Saturdays, so enjoy a beer and some typical food.
Furthermore, there is a beautiful area going to the right side, which has a kind of open exhibition with sculptures but unfortunately it's closed because they are making improvements (last time I checked was beginning of Mars).
Extra tips: on the weekdays, if you have a car it's easy to park inside the museum, just get there a little bit soon (before sunset) and it'll be okay. Otherwise get a taxi. I don't recommend going by bus.
On the weekends it might get crowded, so either you arrive very soon for the sunset or you'll have trouble for parking. Get a cab. No bus.
Enjoy!

I really wanted to see this. As advised I took a cab to get there as it is located off a main road and near a not so nice part of town. Finally got there only to find that staff were reorganising things, or whatever as no one spoke English. The restaurant looked nice but I had just eaten and so left after 5 min

The MAM seems to be closed throughout the end of year season and January 2015. The website is not functioning, there isn't even a sign at the gate. You just have to go there by taxi to be sent away by some guard who doesn't speak or understand anything but Portuguese. Mmmmh, nothing to write home about....
