There is often a lineup at the Elevador Lacerda, so this is a real (and less busy) alternative for the same price (15 Reals each way). I must admit that I went up the elevator but then went down the funicular (then back up the funicular and down the elevator). Great fun!

It was built as an inclined plane, being the oldest means of elevation in the city. It was inaugurated in 1889. It connects the lower part with the historic center area. It has a very economical cost. We used it because the Lacerda Elevator was under renovation. We had to wait in line for a few minutes, especially in the afternoon since there were a lot of people.

There is not just the more famous 'Elevador Lacerda' to travel between Salvador's Cidade Alta (Pelourinho) and its Cidade Baixa (Comercio), but also a funicular railway, located not far away. Its history starts one year after the construction of the elevator in 1873. Redone several times over the decades by companies from different countries like Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, USA (Otis) it is named after the director of the Brazilian agency in charge for its construction.

There are two cabins, which can carry up to 36 passengers at one time. The fee is the same as for the elevator: 0.15 real for each trip.
