Located on top of the cliff where the Elevator Lacerda is located is a square named after the founder the city of Salavdor, a monument in his honour, is the centre piece of the square on the edge of the square is the Rio Branco Palace.

"Praça Thomé de Souza" was the first square built in Salvador, in 1549, by its very first Governor General, Mr. Thomé de Souza. The square belongs to the city's historical center and houses many important buildings, such as the "Palácio Rio Branco" (former Governor's Palace), "Palácio Thomé de Souza" (City Hall), "Memorial da Câmara Municipal de Salvador" (former City Council), "Elevador Lacerda" (elevator connecting the Upper City with the Lower City) and an imponent bronze statue of "Thomé de Souza", naturally.
