The best thing to happen to you here is to see the drum band marching by and feel the rhythm flow through you.

There are a lot of places in the Pelourinho to buy an Olodum shirt or other memorabilia. But, the Olodum shop is constantly releasing new and different merchandise that the other knock-off retailers don't have.

while I didn't buy anything its a great place to learn about the drummers and the MJ connection. The stuff was a little over priced but still nice if you really wanted it. Mostly shirts and pull overs.

They had 2 shops and I was pleased to buy a Cd for just 15 reals. Tuesday night seems the night they play around 7PM. Remember that other music schools also play but you can tell Olodum apart from the colours. Oh and they were the band used for Michael Jacksons video for They don't really care about us.

I ran into them rehearsing in a square while walking around the old city. What a fantastic, energetic group of drummers ! The Tuesday night tradition of street drumming is a unique experience - don't miss it.

I played Michael Jackson's "They don't really care about us" video countless times before, and since our visit to Salvador. We saw the drummers troupes several times around town. A high point of our visit was me booking a percussion class for the 5 of us (I surprised the kids with the reservation for 1.5 hours) , right off the Pelhourinho square (to the right of the stairs at the top building) - it was a fantastic time as we went crazy drumming and discovered that one of us had absolutely no sense of rhythm. The photos and video are treasures. The great teacher is a Oludum member, and we just loved the experience. Since my return I have the Oludum CD in the car and I can't stop playing it, while drumming on the steering wheel in the samba reggae rhythm.

Olodum is present throughout Salvador/Pelourinho, with even a shop at the airport. Here in the old city is their main location, a drumming school and performance venue. They often march around the neighborhood performing, and if you hear what is obviously a loud drum group in the distance, walk and seek them out, it's well worth the short detour and experience.

I am not sure I've ever heard anything quite so loud! They stopped right in front of us, and while the music was very good, the sound bouncing between the walls of a narrow street was almost at pain level. I had to cover my ears (and my little kids'!) and enjoyed the experience of my chest resonating to some of the notes. Wow.

the drums are wonderful, the music is awesome, the dancers are exquisite but the place... it is scary if you are by yourself. (woman solo traveller)
