Porto da Barra is one of the few points of land in Brazil that face west over the Atlantic Ocean (due to its unique geography near the entrance to the Bay of All Saints). Because of this, Porto da Barra features sunsets which are both spectacularly beautiful and endearing because of the way people (visitors and local residents alike) applaud, cheer, whistle and sing while the sun sets over the sea. The water at Porto da Barra Beach is quite calm and perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, ad and other water sports. Even on days when other beaches in Salvador are empty, there is typically a good crowd at Porto da Barra Beach. Porto da Barra also features Portuguese forts dating back to the 17th century and number of good restaurants, bars, shops including used book and record stores, the Instituto Maua, a Bahia state agency which promotes the production and sale of quality hand-made artisan products, and others.

The beach is basically empty by day, but the police presence on the plaza above makes you feel relatively secure. At night, during the weekend anyway, the plaza fills up with an incredible amount of people, there is music and snacks.

The best beach to go to in Barra, Salvador. The waves are tempered by the Itaparica Island which stand in front of the bay. The water is usually nice and warm and crystal clear. Various sections on the beach with vendors providing chairs and parasols for reasonable rates. They will watch over your belongings if you all go in the... More

Calm waters with no currents or waves. This beach is located in the hearth of Barra and offers a wide variety of water sports. After a day at the beach one can choose one of the many restaurants located within walking distance from the beach. Beach chairs and other utensils are available for rent. Always ask for a discount and... More

It's claimed to be the best urban beach in Salvador and it probably is, as far as I know. It's packed, people are having fun for real. It is not a beach to relax, too much going on. Service is great, you can rent your chairs and umbrellas from guys on the beach and once you are their 'client" they... More

have lived in this area 30 years ago, and it was a completely different experience. Today I no longer feel my premium in walking the streets, too many "wanderers" threaten the serenity of the old port, not to mention the beach, dirty and overcrowded. Porto have lost all of its charm ... You can admire it as it once was,... More

The water at the beach was extremely cold when we were there early March but we walked along the Avenue, stopped at one of the local shops for a drink and watched the sunset which was just beautiful. Barra is a nice little town and I wouldn't mind staying there for a few nights next time we visit Brazil.

Local beach. Can get very crowded. We preferred the beach on the other side of the lighthouse. Less crowded. Can rent beach chairs and umbrella easily. The water was great temperature. Solid sand.
