The Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of UFBA University is implanted in a colonial archaeological site which is the most complete architectural remnants of the Jesuits' college built from the mid-sixteenth century. It guards a valuable heritage aiming in preserving and reconstructing the memory and identity of the Brazilian people through its exhibitions.

I entered via a beautiful garden with huge beautiful trees and downstairs to the Museum entrance. The Expo was an Brazilian Indigenous Cultural event and spread across the lower level, really enjoyable and friendly staff.

I went to the museum given that the subject was on the "first Brazilians" (indigenous inhabitants before colonization). Mostly it was just blown up pictures of colonial drawings on this subject matter with text in Portuguese. There was no separate pamphlet for English speakers (or any other language for that matter) to explain the subject matter so I really didn't get anything out of it. There were a few indigenous items in display cases toward the back of the museum. The Lonely Planet guide also said that paying for a ticket to the Museu Afro-Brasileiro also gets you into this museum. However, the people at the desk said this was not true and I had to buy a separate ticket. I would NOT recommend this place to non-Brazilian tourists.
