"Forte de São Diogo" was built at the very beginning of the 17th century, between 1609 and 1613, on the slopes of "Morro de Santo Antônio" and over the ruins of "Castelo de Pereira Coutinho", the ancient residence of one of the first representatives of the Portuguese crown in Bahia. The Fort played important roles in defending Salvador, the first capital of Brazil, from foreign invasions, like those of the Dutch troops led by Count Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen. "Forte de São Diogo" has been totally restored and offers, from its walls, beautiful views of the famous "Baía de Todos os Santos". It also houses "Espaço Carybé de Artes", a virtual gallery honoring the acclaimed Argentinean-Brazilian artist Héctor Carybé. Enjoy!

This review is not about the Carybe exhibit but about the Fort itself. The Fort has been renovated and it sort of completes the architectonical triangle of colonial forts in the district of Barra.

It’s worth paying for a guide to get a bit of colonial history and how Salvador defended itself from Dutch invaders in the 17th century.

The view of the All Saints Bay is amazing. It’s worth visiting it on a sunny day!

Located at Porto da Barra beach. You can visit the forte. Great views of the Bay side of Salvador and of Itaparica Island

Near to where we are staying, the fort was free entry on a festival day but would have paid to go in just to see the interactive museum pieces upstairs in the exhibition area.

Interactive digital displays (all in Portuguese) with good review of the history.
A hidden gem in Salvador, rest if the fort allows view of the lovely sunsets.

It was constructed in the middle of a hill called Morro de Santo Antônio, at the right side of Porto da Barra beach, in the end of the XVI century. Besides being a historical attraction, this fort is an important center of leisure for both inhabitants and visitors.
