The water you see flowing under the bridges of Banja Luka eventually ends up in the Black sea. The Vrbas river, 235 km in length, is a tributary to the Sava which flows into the Danube near Belgrade. Vrba means willow in English. Plenty of willow trees used to grow on the river banks especially near Banja Luka.

Pollution is an increasing problem as industries, agriculture and even sewers of villages and cities dump waste into the river. In 2014 a UNDP project made an inventory of the main polluters, but little has been done to take actual measures to stop it. Perhaps it explains why you do not see a lot of wildlife near and in the river. Near Banja Luka I saw ducks and herons. Fishermen are around to catch whatever is left of remaining fish stocks.

The Vrbas River is a beautiful river that runs through Banja Luka. We sat at a restaraunt the other day and enjoyed the view of the Vrbas River from the restaraunt. There are also activities on the river such as water rafting which looks fun. Definitely visit this river if you are in Banja Luka.

Vrbas river and canyon simply fantastic. Many bars and restaurants adjacent to it in Banja Luka city. Like wise if you travel south (upstream), lots of picnic spots as well. As beautiful as anything else you will find in Europe.

We were there in December 2012 so it was cold, no swimming. It was beautiful though and so cool to see where the hot springs met with the river. The steam rising where the warm water met the cold.

Whether it is as the wide green-hued river in the city, lined by overhanging trees, or the fast-flowing rafters' paradise, the verbas river in Banja Luka is stunning. The gorge that has been cut by the river outside the town is impressive and makes for a great drive. In the summer, there are plenty of restaurants along the river, as well as places to fish for trout.

decent white water rafting, even though in summer there is not too much water, so rafting is calm. we booked a tour with the rafting center just outside of town, direction south. tour guide was good and he was speaking english. good equipment: rafting boat for 8-10 persons, transport with a modern minibus.

You definitely have to spend some time next to the river. Besides the walks within town there are beautiful canyons, waterfalls and hot springs within 10-20 minutes driving but hard to reach on public transportation, you better find a local operator on internet or do some research on the internet and rent a car.

What to say? There is river, there is kayaking or Dayaking. So enjoy in ride while you are in BL. Good place for refreshing in hot summer time.

We did a rafting/canyoning tour on the river with Kanjon Rafting Centar. Chief Aleksandar Pastir and his team gave us an excellent welcome with some local food snacks and meanwhile they explained everything. We were going to do only canyoning at first but cause of the heavy rain fall during night, the whole canyoning tour was not possible. We did a short version and for the same price, we also were allowed to do the rafting. That was an incredible experience, very nice for adventurous and sportive people. The views of the canyon and the forest are stunning. We were allowed to swim in the cold water (only with water proof and safety vests off course) and jump off a bridge. Everything was truly safe, these people have lots of experience and know what they are doing. Afterwards we enjoyed some nice food in their nicely decorated cantina next to the river. A must do day if you are visiting Banja Luka.
