Hirosaki had an abundance of buildings in the Western/Japanese hybrid style from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of them are around an open plaza across and above the main entrance to the castle.
If you can’t visit all of these buildings, you can get a quick and miniature view of many of the historic structures by wandering around to the back of the library.
There are replicas of the historic structures placed along a walkway on the grassed area behind the library in the historic compound. There is a descriptive board with information about each.
Some of the buildings themselves are open to the public, as the City Library is, and others we could not get into but we could look into the windows to get a glimpse of the past.
Worth a visit for lovers of older buildings. The place gives you a real sense of history and days gone by.

This is a building that shouldn't be missed for its exterior. The interior is furnished in period, but the outside is what got me.

An old western style building used formerly as the city library and now used as a display museum. The white-walled building has three storeys, constructed about 100 years ago. Inside are displayed some old furniture and old books and publications. Nothing very interesting, though. Admission is free.

This is a lovely old building if you are into architecture of old buildings. Nice miniatures of other buildings in the compound. Right next to Otemon Square where the new library is now. I love the old and the new siting side by side in harmony - so Japan.

I am not sure the history of his library. The building itself is really beautiful. Admission is free. I just stopped by the library. It is small, so we can see entire building easily.

This beautiful Meiji Period western-style building has been preserved in situ in the heart of Hirosaki. It's fun to wander through the rooms and admire the design of this library. One cannot help but wonder what the Japanese of that time must have thought of it.

Hirosaki is home to a number of retro Western-style buildings, but the Former Hirosaki City Library, with its striking red dome roof, is one of the most representative of the city.
This building was built in 1906 as a memorial to the victory of Japan in the Russo-Japanese War, and was used as the city library until 1931. It is a three-story wooden building, and the twin octagonal towers on either side of the building are beautiful. You can enter the interior for free. The first floor still retains the structure it had when it was a library.

The former Hirosaki City Library was built in 1906, but I was surprised to see that the exterior was a stylish European-style building. The interior is free to enter, and old books are displayed like in a library. It is a short walk from the Ote Gate of Hirosaki Castle. There is also a European-style building in the back.

The miniature is on the verge of destruction. The department store has been removed.
The library itself is wonderful. However, be careful with your slippers as they can be slippery.
