This castle was built for children more than adults. There's a lot of interactive things to do for them. The history is interesting too and the castle replica is very beautiful. The garden nearby is also nice, you can feed the carp fish there.

Kokura Castle is easily accessible to everyone and not far from the downtown area, train station, etc. I love the castles around Japan, so I was excited to see this one. It is not an original castle, but still well worth seeing. The area up to the castle is beautiful. The castle grounds are decent in size but the main keep and foundation is massive. When I was down by the moat, I was amazed by the size of it. You can get great photos of the moat and castle. I did not go inside the castle for the museum as I was limited on time. I feel the outside is definitely worth seeing.

The castle is closed for refurbishment but I wandered around the typically Japanese garden, a guest house and a temple - all of which were worth visiting. The setting is, unfortunately, not great because the castle grounds are hemmed in by modern high rise buildings.

I have been to Kumamoto castle last time I visited Kyushu. This time I decided to visit another castle. I found rather good reviews for the Kokura castle but only if the travellers have spare time. However, I decided to visit Kokura castle and it was much better than I thought. Although Kokura castle was small comparing to other famous castles in Japan, the interactive display inside the castle was the best. You can try riding in a Daimyo carriage, watching a story telling video (although in Japanese), and racing to the professional ancient Japanese messenger, etc. I would suggest visiting the castle only if you are foreigners, although they sell a combined ticket for the garden and a museum at a very good price. It was about 10 minute walk from Nishi Kokura station (one station before Kokura if you are coming from Hakata) and enter at the further entrance. But to get a nice picture of the castle, you must walk to the garden.

Easy to reach castle in the middle of Kokura city, with beautiful architecture and a remarkable museum inside where I specially recommend to visit the diorama showing how the city was in 1600 made with paper dolls, it is said to be one of the largest in Japan. Even if all the explanations are all in Japanese is worth the visit.
At the top of the castle you can also spot the surroundings.
The museum/castle closes the ticket counter at 16:30 in winter time. It will take you around 45 minutes if you cannot understand Japanese.

Kokura Castle is attractive to look at but less interesting inside. There are better castles to visit such as Himeji and Matsue. Worth a look all the same and there are other attractions near by such as the Yasaka Shinto Shrine.

The castle itself offers many great photo opportunities especially at sunset. It is also conveniently located directly next to a shopping center. I wish I could have spent more time there. I will go back on my next visit.

The castle is within walking distance (for young people) from the JR station. A shopping mall is also nearby. The castle is surrounded by waterway where you can see many huge carps and tortoises. After finsihing all the steps to the top of the castle the view is no doubt refreshing. You can see around the whole city with a 360 degree view. Have an ice cream before heading down the castle to cool you down and to give you the required energy.

The castle was closed for renovation when I visited. It should be noted that the renovation notice was posted only in the Japanese version of the website (English version of the website seems not as actively updated). Anyway, visitors may still walk around the neat and quiet castle grounds. The castle itself looks well-maintained. This is the 3rd Japanese castle that I have been to, and I find it only mildly interesting. Perhaps, it would have been more interesting if I was able to tour inside the castle.
Kokura castle is some 15 minutes walk from Kokura station. Going towards the castle, plenty of directions are available in English/Romaji. After the castle, visitors may head straight to the nearby mall for some shopping.
