Mojiko Retro is a special and quiet place. It looks old-fashioned, like a time long ago. When we went there, we felt calm and peaceful.
The buildings in Mojiko Retro are very old and pretty. They remind us of the past. People took good care of them, so they still look like they did a long time ago. When we walked around, it felt like we traveled back in time.
What we liked the most was how slow everything felt. There are cute little cafes, small shops, and places to look at art. We had a nice cup of coffee at a cozy café. The people there were kind and told us stories about the place.
Mojiko Retro is next to the water, and the view is amazing. We watched big boats go by, felt the wind on our faces, and enjoyed the pretty scenery. We also visited the famous Mojiko Station, which is made of red bricks. It's a cool old building that fits with the old-time feel of the place.
Mojiko Retro is perfect if you want a peaceful and old-fashioned experience. It's a place where you can take a break from the fast world and enjoy the beauty of a time gone by. Whether you explore the old streets, try local food, or just look at the calm water, it's a place that makes you feel relaxed and connected to history. We left Mojiko Retro feeling happy and wanting to come back whenever we need a break from busy life.

Previously, I stayed near Mojiko Port and spent a lot of time walking around during the day, so I stopped by a convenience store and parked my car on the quay before dawn. I met several locals walking around and exchanged greetings with them. My wife had brought a flashlight with her to walk along the bridge in front of the car.

If you have time to spare, this is worth a visit. The station itself is very nice. The buildings around it and the promenade are different from the normal building, a glimpse to its past as a main trading hub. Good stroll along the promenade.

We take the JR train from Kokura to Mojiko station. The lady from information counter in Mojiko station recommend us to do a round trip from Mojiko to Shimonoseki (Honshu island) and back with the Kanmon Clover ticket (¥800)
First we walk to Kyushu Historic Railway (next to JR Mojiko train station) to purchase a Kanmon Clover ticket. This clover ticket covers 3 rides - the sighseeing train ride to Kanmon Mekari station, sanden bus ride to Shimonoseki Karato pier & ferry ride from Shimonoseki Karato pier to Mojiko port.
After purchasing the tickets, we queue and wait for the sightseeing steam train. The train rides takes about 20min. The narration is in Japanese. When the train enter the tunnel, please look up. In darkness the ceiling transform into an underwater scene with fishes. The train stop at Mekari Kanmon station.
From here we walk along coastal path (400m) to the Kanmon Tunnel Pedestrian entrance. A lovely walk enjoying the beautiful scenery of Kanmon straits and the bridge. There is a Mekari shrine and a local restaurant nearby.
We enter the Kanmon Tunnel pedestrian building and take the lift 9th floors down. The lift open to a large area with information on the Kanmon Bridge and sights around it. We proceed to the tunnel starting to walk across Kanmon straits under the sea. Take around 10 – 15mins to arrive at the other end – Shimonoseki in Honshu island. Take the lift up to the entrance of the building.
Upon exiting the building, you see two samurai warriors statues in their battle stands. Also a row of cannons. Interestingly one of the cannon still blow out smoke at specific time.
From the entrance on the left, we walk heading to Hinoyama. Take the cable car ride up to the observation deck for a panoramic view of Kysuhu island and the Kanmon straits. The Kanmon Straits divide the largest island of the Japanese archipelago, Honshū, and the southernmost island Kyushu. There is a park with colourful flowers.
After 2 hours we take the cable car down and walk across opposite road of the tunnel entrance building to take the bus to Kato ferry pier. There are lots of shop selling everything to do with fugu at the waterfront. Must try fugu which is famous here.
After a good filled of fugu sashimi and porridge, we take the ferry back to Mojiko port. From the port is just a 5min walk to Mojiko JR station. Its almost 6.30pm when we arrive back at Mojio JR station. The train station is even more beautiful in the evening when lighted up. Say goodbye to Mojiko, we arrive back to Kokura by train (10min ride).
A great and fun day trip which can be done easily at your own pace from Kitakyushu.

Mojiko Port
There is an excellent tour loop that you can do to explore both sides of Kanmon Straits. That is the charm of Mojiko.
First, when arrive at Mojiko, you may explore the many history buildings and Kaikyo Plaza. Take a photo with Kanmonkyo Bridge in the background.
After that, you may take the ferry across Kanmon Straits to Karato Area. Once you are in Karato, you have cross over from Kyushu to Honshu, the main island of Japan.
There is one historic building called Shunpanro 春帆楼 that I recommend that you pay a visit to. That was the place where Qing Dynasty Li Hong Zhang signed a treaty with Japan that ended up with the annexation of Taiwan by Japanese Empire.
Following that, you may proceed to the under-sea pedestrian tunnel. Kanmon Tunnel I believe is the only pedestrian walkway under the sea in the whole world. You can virtually walk across the Straits under the sea to come back to Kyushu.
At the other end of the tunnel, you may just ride on Mojiko Retro Train Shiokaze-go to come back to Mojiko Station.
If you still have time, pay a visit to the train museum next to the train station. However, Mojiko Retro Train only operate from March to Noveember each year. Please check their timing before you decide to go on the loop.

We just loved this plc since we visited in Nov 2014. The Mojiko is also known as the Retro Historic District, a charming port town along the Kanmon Strait (end of the JR Kagoshima Line). The site is only 10 minute of walk from the Mojiko Station, which itself is another tourist spot and is a designated national important cultural property. Immediate points to visit will be the Old Moji Mitsui Club which once hosted Dr. Albert Einstein and his wife is just nearby as well as the Kyushu Railway History Museum.
Walking around the area leisurely takes more than 2 hours, depending on how far you want to venture. This time we walked further northwards to explore the many interesting historic buildings we missed out.. We were lucky to witness the last lifting of the drawbridge (Blue Wing Moji) at 4pm, which is just nearby Minato House! And waited till it lower before crossing over... From here we walked along the promenade, with boats/yatch and the Tsushima straits on the left and retro train humming on the right. Trust me the feel is out-of-the-world. A tad windy and cold though so wearing a windbreaker helps!
It's nice to see many buildings in retro style, Renaissance like, and enjoying the atmosphere of Japan 100 years ago! We walked till the entrance of the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel (Moji-ko side), no plan to venture till Honshu!!. We did an about-turn and stroll leisure’s amongst the neighbourhood. Hitting 甲宗八幡神社Koso Hachiman Shrine was a coincident. While not as famous as the Mekari shrine shrine to us it surprises more. Quite elevated it has some vintage views of the Kannon Straits and even the Peace Pagoda. There were also interesting memorial statures and plaques. We recommend you to visit here too.
Finally back to Retro where we went for dinner. We did not try the popular local dish, "roasted curry," but instead chose something more tradition. This was followed by skimming through the Level 1 souvenirs shops at the Kaikyo Plaza.
Here there are a few restaurants/cafes, souvenir shops, and shops selling dry seafood products and local produce. It is also near this area where they are “banana auctions”, not strange as banana products are a specialty of Moji Port. You can find so many snacks using banana as the main product.
A romantic walk along the promenade by the sea complete our revisit here. We left to take a long train journey back Fukuoka, with fond memories of Mojiko Retro.!
[We almost missed this again as we reached Fukuoka in mid-April when Kyushu was hit by waves of earthquake. But wifey and me decided to proceed with the day trip to Kokura and glad we made the right decision. Still our heart is with those whom have suffered, hope life will be normalize the soonest..]

This trip is on weekends only and is a steal for 800 yen. From the train station go to the information center and purchase the ticket. Then take the retro train to the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel and walk under the Kanmon Strait. Once on the main Island, (Honshu), take the bus to the ferry port and the ship brings you back to Mojiko.

First off, don't do the city course (or whatever they called it). On Sunday all the shopping arcades were empty and the open-air markets were shuttered. I was told by someone from Kokura that they were probably never open.
Make your own trip. I walked all over the city and had fun. There's a maritime musuem that has a display of old buoy lights. There's a telecommunications museum with old phones and phone switches. There's lots to see from the observation deck. There's an excellent (though small) train museum! There's a pedestrian tunnel under the Tsushima Strait! There's a brewery with inoffensive beer!

The building restorations of old buildings are next to ultra- modern ones, and the straits and waterways lend a very nice charm to this area, ahich has attracted some good restaurants and bars as well. There is a very convenient and inexpensive ferry which takes you very near to the Shimonoseki Fish Market (takes bicycles, too!) so getting across either way is very easy and worthwhile.

I visited the place where Albert Einstein stayed during his first visit to Japan in 1943. The house is now a seaman's club/association. It did not matter whether Einstein stayed there or not because it did give a good glimpse of a typical visitors lodge during that era with antique looking furniture, wash basin and stand alone bathtub. It was a good walk into the past.
The town of Mojiko is called "retro" because it is now only a place of interest for visitors - the streets were fairly empty except for lots of tourist walking around. I am told that the locals do not live in the town center but in the outskirts. Mojiko was once a booming trading port for ships but now it is a relic of its past glories. Strolling through the streets give you a sense of past history.
