A couple of days ago we visited Ise Jingu and found it a great experience . It was very busy and a very hot day . Luckily there are a lot of huge trees everywhere that give welcome shade. We had a private guide organised and booked a few days before through the tourist information Centre and that is where we met her,, Hasako was a lovely lady and came dressed in a kimono, for three hours she walked us around the fantastic Shinto Shrines explaining the history and religious significance of them. These Shrines are the most sacred in Japan and is a place most Japanese try to visit at least one time in their lives. The place is full of mystery and mythology and is apparently the place where the Imperial Family of Japan originated from the Sun God. About 8 million visitors come every year from all around the world to this unique place . 125 Shrines make up Ise Jingu so plan to spend a fair amount of time here and if possible use a guide, their are only a few English speaking guides, Hasako was one of them, we thank her for a great learning experience.

For this place, even one star review is far too generous.

If you want to be abused and ordered around by xenophobe bigots - this place is for you.
Everything is closed off and you can only walk main route filled with tourists.

Parking is absolute disaster.

If you want to enjoy scenic religious place - Tsubaki Grand Shrine near Suzuka or Toyokawa Inari in Aichi are much more attractive destinations.

Visitors to Mie will surely come by here for a visit and even the Royal Family of Japan will come here to visit annually.

The entire shrine is located in a sort of nature, will mountains, river lakes around, full of greenery, flowers, trees all around. As we walked in, there were so many visitors as it was a Sunday. The walk could be a little challenging for some (some paths are filled with little stones and rocks), the scenery was surely breathtaking and scenic and so nice especially for nature lovers!

We had to make a detour leading to the stepways to the shrine and just like all, we follow the rituals to pray, made a wish and threw coins into the praying ground (sorry, no photography was allowed and that's why no photo was taken) though we were not into shintoism or buddhism. It's a good place to learn about the religion, culture, history and how the royal family was involved in it.

Then we walked past a tree that was "thousand years old" and many went to touch and hug it to "absorb" it's live energy. Moving forward, was the souvenir shops where you can queue to receive/send your blessings.

It's very beautiful here and love the serenity, tranquility and calmness here! Just the scenery here is worth a visit!

The most holly ground in Japan! and a beautiful park all around the area.
This is by far the most important Shinto religion site in Japan.
Even if you are not so much into Buddhism or Shinto, the place is so beautiful.
Lots of green, green and more green.
The temple itself is very important in Japaneses couture, but not that special visually.

This is one of the oldest and most revered shrines in Japan.

So if you are an history buff, of enjoy the mystery and feeling of a power spot, you will be happy to stroll in this shrine.

It's really a nice feeling to visit there, and even though you can feel the devotion of many people, some come to feel a power spot, and many visitors are like you, just curious about the place and here to visit.

We visited this shrine while on a cruise ship excursion from Toba. It is not very far from the port, and definitely worth visiting. Our five-hour excursion from Toba included the Grand Shrine and Okage Yokocho shopping area at Ise, the Futami Okitama shrine, Meotoiwa, and Pearl Island at Toba. This is a very spiritually meaningful and interesting place.

We were staying in Nagoya and took the 1 hour and 45 minute JR train to Ise. We visited on Thursday, January 2. Took the JR Rapid Mie and the cost was 2520 yen for the round trip. We actually bought the train tickets the day before. Once we arrived in Ise, we visited the Outer Shrine first since it is within walking distance. The Outer Shrine is believed to have been established 1500 years ago, 500 years after the Inner Shrine.

Then we took a bus for 310 yen per person to get to the Inner Shrine. That ride took 20 minutes. The Inner Shrine is Japan's most sacred shrine and believed to have been established over 2000 years ago.

Entrance is free for both shrines. The only problem we had with visiting on January 2 was that ALL the Japanese people were paying their respects and boy was it crowded. However, it was a Japanese type of crowded and everything was very orderly. I think had it been less crowded, it would have been more peaceful and enjoyable.

Came here on a bright sunny day. A natures peaceful walk. Be respectful regardless if you believe or not. Take bow before you enter the gates and go through the gates, not around it. There’s a hand wash station before you walk up to the temple... approx 5-10 minute walk. At the temple, there is no picture taking allowed. Bow twice, clap twice, and one final bow then exit. On your way back, enjoy the koi pond where the koi’s are huge (> 16”).

Much larger than Geku shrine and situated next to Isuzu river. The water in the river is very clear. Saw many people filling up their bottles with the water. More impressive buildings and a beautiful garden at the front. There are many tall, trees. Must have been around for hundreds of years. Saw many people hugging the trees. Most of the visitors head to the main shrine hall to pay homage. Just like at Geku, many areas are walled up and off limits. No photos.

Didn’t realise that you were unable to see much of the shrine before getting soaked in the rain getting there. A pleasant walk to the shrine itself was unable to be had because of the weather. Of the many shrines we have seen during our visit to Japan this was the least inspiring. It may be the most important shrine in Japan but for tourists there are much better places to visit.
