After our visit to the Daibutsu temple we found our way along a main road that led to the Daibutsukiritoshi trail. This was not a easy trail and there were many steps to reach a decent walking trail. I am not a great hiker and abhor steep steps but I managed to make it along the trail. It was not a long hike and at the end of it all, it did turn out to be quite exhilarating.

Very tranquil. Great day trip with family. Walkable and close to good food. Shrines are nearby. Bus transportation will drop you off in front of the park where Buddha is located.

Daibutsukiritoshi Trail

After our visit to the Daibutsu temple we found our way along a main road that led to the Daibutsukiritoshi trail. This was not a easy trail and there were many steps to reach a decent walking trail. I am not a great hiker and abhor steep steps but I managed to make it along the trail. It was not a long hike and at the end of it all, it did turn out to be quite exhilarating.

Perfect day hike

My husband and I started at Kencho-ji Temple then followed the main road til we found the start of the Daibutsukiritoshi Trail. It is a fairly strenuous hike, about 2.2K, with many roots in the path - watch your step! Many ups and downs with plenty of steps. I loved it!

About halfway along the trail, we came upon Genjiyama Park where many families were enjoying their hanami under many beautiful cherry trees. We stopped to enjoy the children playing and families relaxing before continuing on. There were many views of the sea from the hike.

We visited the Daibutsu the day before, so we continued on to our airbnb where we were happy to take our shoes off and put our feet up! If you like to hike, this is a very enjoyable day trip.

Great hike

The beginning of the hike has great rock faces, like something from an Indiana Jones movie. At certain points, the wind picks up and the breeze feels amazing.

The end of the hike is mediocre though, with so-so scenery and plenty of mosquitoes.

Altogether, worth it though. Not a very long hike either, can be completed in about 90 minutes at a leisurely pace.

Perhaps the most iconic image in all of Japan

This bronze of the Lord Buddha, cast in 1252 AD, stands in a peaceful and tranquil garden and Gautama sits gazing at those of us who come to revere His shrine, emanating a radiance of His spirit which He has done so over all of these past centuries and continues to do so.

Wonderful hiking trail. Not recommended for someone who isn't capably of a fairly strenuous walk. Be aware that not all directional signs and maps are in English.
