To get to Karato market, you need to use the fery service from Mojiko, not far, about 10 minute across it, you can enjoy the bay view from the ferry...

A short walk from jetty to the market, you can see lot of shop on the way. The atmosphere here is great, and you can spent quality time with your friend or family , checking out the food they offer here.

Don't expect 1st class food quality, but all is decently prepare and very wide range of seafood that everyone can enjoy.... not just seafood, various kind of food is also being sold, so everyone can enjoy their favourite meal.... beside the price is very fair and reasonable if being compare else where...so why not ?

Lots of vendors selling good fresh sushi. Take your time and walk around to see all that the vendors are offering. Many marine products to take home and a good fish market atmosphere. reasonable prices. You can also watch the many boats coming and going from the port.

Best to come here on a day when you can choose food from the vendors but my favorite place to eat is the sushi train on the second floor.

We had a great time at the Karato Sea Market. Had a good brunch there. Buy from the stalls and eat it on the 2nd floor overlooking the market or enjoy it outside the market sea front boardwalk.

Got there about 11am, not much happening in the main floor, people all waiting for food, lucky it was only Friday, but still wait for an hour. Interesting place to visit, somewhat I was excepting more.

It is a market of seafood. Like former Tsukihi Market, it is more or less touristic. There is also some restaurants.

Enjoyed fresh Salmon and Pufferfish sashimi! Bought it from one of the stalls and ate it at the jetty area.

It took us 17mins on the Shinkansen from Hakata to Kokura (using our hiroshima-yamaguchi JR pass), then 14mins Kagoshima line train from Kokura to Mojiko (280 yen), then local bus (no 74 Mekari, 230 yen) to Kanmon pedestrian under-the-sea tunnel, then 780m walk through the tunnel, then caught another local bus to Karato market. Sounds like a complicated way to get there, right? Well, it was, but worth the entire loop as it was a really interesting fish/sushi market.

Karato market is a fish market by the port/docks. There is no entrance fee. It is not like the famous fish market in Tokyo, in that it doesnt have lots of large fish to be sold. What it does have is stall after stall after stall selling a large variety of sushi, some fish for sale, and some shellfish. It is famous for FUGU (pufferfish or blow fish) which is caught in abundance in the surrounding waters. The entire port area has decorations in the form of fugu, from lanterns, to statues, to paintings etc.

The sushi was fresh and mainly raw, consisting of various types of fish, salmon, fugu, prawns, squid, sea urchin, eel, fish roe and octopus. I thought the fugu was a bit bland, but hubby thought it was wonderful. Still, you have to try the fugu as it is not easy to get elsewhere and you do need a trained chef to be able to prepare it for consumption (remove its poison).

For those who wont eat anything raw, try the prawn tempura (fried in vegetable oil - i asked!). It was delicious and it was difficult to stop.

We then caught the kanmon ferry back to mojiko station for 400 yen (5mins).

A really good day out and worth the trip!

Seafood markets have got to be one of my favorite attractions in coastal cities. I am surprised there are not more in Yamaguchi, but this one is amazing! The Karato Sea Market serves fresh fish for locals and us tourists. A lot of people grab sushi and other items to go and sit on the lawn out front. The Karato Sea Market is famous for Fugu, or Blowfish. This dish is popular among tourists because of its toxins, but hey! It is fun to try it and say you did it! Taste wise, nothing special. I must have gone through this market like 3 times getting different food items to try. Pretty much everything I had was great and fresh! This is probably the most popular attraction in Shimonoseki, so make sure to check it out and spend some money on fresh seafood!

This is a pretty decent fish market. It's not too huge and it gets seriously crowded with Chinese tourists who come in by the boatload.
